I want to go there: a Scandinavian hotel where you can sleep in a tree in a UFO cabin

A hotel in Sweden where you can live in a tree

For creative tourists there is also a nest room and a glass cube. And the active ones are already waiting for dog sleds and long hikes through the forest.

If a tree house has always been your childhood dream, it’s time to realize it. In Sweden, there is a whole city in the trees, where you can come to relax from routine, eat delicious northern food and enjoy unspoiled nature with all the comforts and conveniences of a good hotel. In a tall tree, no one is sure to get you.

About the hotel

The Treehotel is located in Harads, and its rooms are not just nestled in the crowns of trees, but also have a quirky design. Guests can live inside a glass cube, feel like aliens by getting a room in a flying saucer, or get as close to the birds as possible and climb into a huge and comfortable bird’s nest. The rooms offer fantastic views of the valley, miles of forest and the mighty river. And if you’re lucky enough to be at the hotel between September and March, you’re sure to see the northern lights.

Special attention should be paid to the restaurant. Tourists are offered all kinds of delicacies of the northern country. For example, for lunch you can taste the meat of reindeer or moose, and as a dessert you can try lemon sorbet with fresh local berries.

Success story

The International Metropolis in the Trees was built by career counselor Kent Lindwall and nurse Britta Jonsson-Lindwall. They never imagined that one day their hotel would be visited by TV producers from all over the world, celebrities and even Sweden’s Crown Princess Victoria, whom Britta treated with her pies.

The couple turned an old nursing home in their home village into a hotel. At first, the project didn’t bring the family much income, although it was run with a lot of love and care by the owners. But then things changed.

One day, the then unknown director Jonas Selberg Augustsen stopped by the guesthouse. He was working on the movie Tradalskaren (“Tree Lover”), which later became his breakthrough. The filming centered around a tree house, and after the director and crew left, Britta thought, “Is such a beautiful tree house going to go to waste? Why not rent it out?”

While the Swedish village was filming the masterpiece, Kent and his friends were fishing in Russia. Those friends turned out to be three prominent architects in Sweden – Bertil Harström, Thomas Sandell and Marten Kieren. Kent mentioned the idea of designer hotel rooms, and the architects became enamored with it. Before leaving Russia, they agreed that they would each design one room.

After these events, Treehotel’s business went uphill and it became very popular with tourists.

How to get there?

First, you will need to fly to the capital of Sweden – Stockholm, and then take a plane to the city of Luleå – it will take about 70 minutes. From the airport of this town, the hotel will organize a paid transfer, which will also take about 70 minutes.

The best way to get to know Swedish Lapland is with a private local guide who will meet you at Luleå airport and drive you to the Treehotel. During such a tour you can get to know more about the Swedish region and the Arctic lifestyle, see the towns of Luleå and Boden and learn about their history. This service includes hot/cold drinks and local snacks, a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage church town of Gammelstad.

How much does it cost?

Airplane ticket to Stockholm from Moscow from 10 thousand rubles (the country is still closed for tourists)
Transfer without a guide for two people 17 thousand rubles
Transfer with a guide for two people 24 thousand rubles
Accommodation for two people (two nights + breakfast) 100 thousand rubles
