I want to go there: winter windsurfing on the Gulf of Finland

Windsurfing on the Gulf of Finland

If you love the classic version of the sport, why not try riding in the cold?

We are used to windsurfing on the ocean, but, it turns out, for real connoisseurs of this sport, cold and snow are no obstacle. It successfully operates year-round, and in winter it even has many advantages. But it is still at the stage of active development, especially in Russia.

The emergence of windsurfing in Russia

Winter windsurfing appeared back in the 70s of the twentieth century. It perfectly fit into the idea of conquering all possible natural forces and the realization of human potential. In 1983 for the first time all-union championships were held, and Russian athletes have been winning international competitions for many years. At the World Championship in 2011 Andrei Khargovsky from Arkhangelsk won in Finland, and in 2013 he proved again in a hard fight that Russia’s leadership in winter windsurfing is undeniable. Thus, the 2014 World Championship was held in St. Petersburg.

Peculiarities of technique

Winter windsurfing can be practiced on any snowy terrain, but it is better to choose: mountain slopes, snowy steppes or frozen rivers and lakes, so the Gulf of Finland is an ideal option. What could be more exciting than gliding on ice against the backdrop of mesmerizing scenery? Riding technique is not different from water windsurfing, the sail is also used similarly.

Only in winter, due to the hardness of the surface under the board, the center of gravity of the windsurfer is shifted downward, so the athlete often rides almost lying down. With the help of the boom, he guides the sail by parallel steering with his feet. To keep the balance, the rider rolls into the wind, tilts the sail and “hangs out” on his arms. A trapeze is always used: a strong hook on a powerful belt, which is used to cling to special loops on the boom, making it easier to guide the sail.

Skate designs. In action, the most controllable and fastest way, but only a real professional is able to cope with them.

Two-ski windward. Two classic edge skis of 2.5 meters each, which are fastened with a wooden or metal board. This type is most often chosen for skiing on the Gulf of Finland, as it is quite easy to control, while maximizing stability in strong winds and dense snow. It is the one that is best suited to all those who wish to acquire such an experience.

How much does it cost?

A round-trip airplane ticket from Moscow about 4000 rubles per person
Accommodation in the hotel “Repinskaya” for two people 9200 rubles/2 nights + breakfast
Airport transfer from 3000 rubles

Winter windsurfing classes, unfortunately, are not held for beginners due to unsafe conditions and inconvenience for instructors and trainees. Windsurfing on ice is suitable for those who already have experience riding a board with a sail and want to diversify it.

The winter windsurfing season starts in November and lasts all winter, so if you are a pro – come for new sensations, and if you are a beginner – why not watch the competitions, cheer for the athletes and live right on the shore of the Gulf of Finland? Unforgettable emotions are guaranteed under any circumstances.
