The 90th Oscar film awards ceremony ended in Los Angeles. This time, the coveted statuette was also given to films on sports themes. The best animated short film was “Dear Basketball”, and the best documentary was “Icarus”, a movie about doping in the Russian Olympic team.

“Dear Basketball.”

An animated short film in a few minutes tells the story of American basketball star Kobe Bryant. The hero of the movie writes a letter in verse, addressing basketball itself. He tells how he fell in love with this sport and decided to dedicate his life to it, how he trained and achieved results, and now he is finishing his career, saying goodbye to his favorite game: “Always love you. Kobe.”

Kobe Bryant is a legendary NBA player who played for 20 seasons for the Los Angeles Lakers. Kobe is known for his over-performing game. During his sports career he won 5 championship titles, two Olympic gold medals, 18 times took part in the All-Star game, as well as together with Nike released several pairs of basketball sneakers named in his honor.

“Icarus.”

Amateur cyclist and American director Brian Vogel had the idea of making a movie about doping and using his own example to show how it affects the results of an athlete. Fogel was looking for experts for his picture and so met the “main character” of his tape – the ex-head of the Moscow anti-doping laboratory and WADA informant Grigory Rodchenkov.

It can be considered that Icarus is just a video retelling of a 2016 interview with the New York Times in which Rodchenkov accused Russian authorities of creating a system of doping by athletes. Based on this testimony, the independent WADA commission submitted two reports and almost left the Russians without the 2016 Olympics in Rio and the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang, where our national team went under a neutral flag.

Earlier, the tape was awarded the “Orwell Prize” and the Audience Choice Award at the Sundance Film Festival. In his Oscar acceptance speech, Vogel said he was dedicating the win to fearless whistleblower Grigory Rodchenkov, and added: “We hope that the movie ‘Icarus’ will open the world’s eyes to what is happening in Russia and that telling the truth is more important today than ever.”

Another sports drama, “Tonya vs. Everyone,” was among the nominees for the movie award . Allison Janney, who played the formidable mother of American figure skater Tonya Harding, won the statuette as Best Supporting Actress.
