What diseases should not be treated with massage and why?

The purpose of getting a massage procedure can be different. Someone undergoes relaxing massage sessions for pleasure, for others it can be a vital procedure. But despite the existence of different types and techniques, there are certain contraindications associated with health risks.

The most obvious ones are the presence of wounds, acute inflammation, infectious and skin diseases, recent trauma or surgery. But there are also less obvious ones. Let’s break them down in more detail.

Fever

Any type of massage can entail a change in the internal environment. And this increases the risk of worsening.

Decrease in platelets in the blood

Deep massage techniques are contraindicated in case of a pronounced decrease in platelet levels. They can provoke not only bruising, but also severe hematomas.

Venous diseases

For this category of patients, deep tissue massage is very dangerous, because it increases the risk of releasing a thrombus. What it is dangerous and how to avoid it, read in the material at the link.

Expressed osteoporosis

With this pathology, the density of bones decreases, and they become quite fragile. There is a high probability of fractures, especially in the elderly.

Liver insufficiency

During massage, the amount of fluid returning to the blood due to edema increases. This increases the strain on the liver, causing even more liver damage.

Taking blood thinners

Patients who are taking such medications should not be massaged. In addition to the formation of hematomas and bruising, there is a possibility that an inexperienced masseur may provoke internal bleeding.

There are other contraindications to the procedure, such as pregnancy with complications. This is far from an exhaustive list.

To avoid negative consequences, it is recommended:

  • consult with your doctor regarding your condition and the possibility of attending procedures;
  • choose certified masseurs with the appropriate education;
  • before the session to warn the specialist about the presence of chronic diseases, traumas, allergic reactions to drugs, food products (to reduce the likelihood of allergies to oils and other means).

This information will help the masseur to choose an individual approach when working with you – locally avoid traumatized areas, use more gentle techniques and special means. Read more about the benefits of massage in the article at the link.
