American scientists have added a health sensor to a mask. How it works and why it is needed

Scientists have added a health sensor to the mask. Why?

Now you definitely won’t get to wear the same one multiple times.

How does the new health sensor built into the mask work?

We figure it out together with an expert.

Fans of health checks – this news is for you. The familiar pandemic attribute will become much more functional. Engineers have added health monitoring capabilities to the face mask.

Such a sensor can promptly detect changes in the condition, potentially life-threatening.

In case of any problems, the system warns the wearer and recommends to consult a doctor. For example, the sensor detects a rapid heartbeat by subtle head movements. For comparison: the usual fitness bracelet uses LEDs for this purpose, the accuracy of which sometimes fails. The novelty is also able to determine fatigue, physical and emotional health. If the device notices signs of stress, it notifies you about the need to take a walk or take a break.

The device uses energy from a tiny battery, but also knows how to recharge from the sun, a person’s breath, their movements and body heat. This extends the battery life of the sensor – a charge lasts for 1-2 weeks. It is known that the sensor has already been tested by medical staff. So when developing the device, engineers relied on feedback from doctors, nurses and paramedics. But so far you can not buy a smart device, because it has not yet passed clinical trials.

How does the sensor work?

Sergei: Such a sensor can quickly detect changes in a potentially life-threatening condition and indicate the need for medical attention. For example, the initial diagnosis of a stroke is associated with a sudden narrowing of the circulatory system. And in cardiac asthma, there is a sudden development of shortness of breath at rest, difficulty breathing and a feeling of suffocation. In these cases, the sensor will record an irregular pulse or arrhythmic breathing.

Conclusion. A smart sensor cannot yet replace a doctor and guarantee the accuracy of data, but it can control the fit and freshness of the mask.
