“Alopecia, or baldness – partial or complete loss of hair on the scalp, face or trunk. Approximately 50% of men under 50 years of age and about 70-80% of men over 70 years of age face this problem.”

Causes of baldness

The most common cause of alopecia is a hormonal disorder: excessive hair loss in most cases is due to the increased sensitivity of hair follicles to testosterone. This type of baldness is called androgenic alopecia.

At the same time, baldness can be temporary (telogen alopecia) and is most often associated with a lack of certain elements in the body, such as iron or zinc, vitamins A and E.

Provoke baldness can include:

  • frequent stress and emotional overstrain;
  • improper nutrition;
  • hereditary predisposition;
  • taking certain medications, for example, cytostatics (a group of antitumor drugs);
  • infectious, fungal, endocrine, metabolic, autoimmune and cancer diseases.

After 50 years of age, alopecia occurs due to deterioration of blood circulation. Hair follicles are not supplied with enough oxygen, which causes their thinning and, consequently, hair loss.

Degrees of baldness

The Norwood scale, which includes seven stages of baldness, is used to determine the degree of baldness. In men, alopecia usually begins with the formation of visible bald spots in the temples, forehead, and/or parietal region. Over time, the hair on the top of the head begins to thin, and the hairline in the forehead recedes even further.

As the alopecia progresses, there is a complete loss of hair in the front of the head, with the hair remaining mainly on the back of the head in the shape of a horseshoe. The condition in which there is a complete loss of hair is called total alopecia.

Prevention and treatment

In order to stop the process of baldness and restore hair growth you should consult a trichologist. First of all, it is necessary to establish the cause of hair loss and assess the condition of hair follicles. To do this, a man will need to take a blood test and undergo a trichogram. After identifying the provoking factor, the specialist will select a treatment scheme.

To correct the condition, drug therapy is used: vitamins, trace elements, drugs that normalize blood circulation, combined with the use of therapeutic shampoos, serums, masks and balms.

As the main treatment option, mesotherapy or laser treatment can be used. If conservative therapy is ineffective, as well as in late stages of alopecia areata, only hair transplantation will help to cope with baldness.
