Why do you need to alkalize your water? How pH affects the body

Water is the source of human life. Its benefits have been repeatedly proven by scientists around the world. The quality of the water we drink is one of the main criteria of health. Normal drinking water has a neutral pH value (hydrogen value). And for the body to function properly, it is important to maintain an acid-alkaline balance. What is water alkalinization, why is it necessary and how to do it correctly, let’s understand together with nutritionist Anna Glumova.

What is alkalization?

Alkalizing the body is a very popular topic today. Many processes depend on the blood pH level (acid-alkaline balance). Moreover, deviations from the norm can lead to serious disorders and health problems up to the point of death.

A normal blood pH is considered to be 7.37-7.44 on the pH scale.

The pH level is affected by:

  • food and water;
  • the mineral content of the body;
  • the proper functioning of the excretory systems.

Different foods can both acidify and alkalize the body. The former include animal protein, sugar, flour, alcohol, coffee, and others. And to the latter, such as greens, vegetables, algae, etc.

However, the human body is really amazingly organized. Thanks to homeostasis (the desire of all systems to maintain balance), normal pH levels are maintained without additional effort. Excess acid from food is excreted with urine. By the way, it is the urine is the easiest way to track changes in this indicator: just buy special test strips in the pharmacy.

What is dangerous deviation from the norm?

When the pH level in the blood becomes lower than 7.35, acidosis occurs – acidification of the blood. This condition is important to diagnose in time. After all, when the body can not cope with the elimination of excess acids, it can even lead to coma.

And the increase in pH above 7.45 causes alkalosis – excessive accumulation of alkaline compounds in the blood. It is also very dangerous.

How to alkalize water?

Today, the health market offers various means to alkalize drinking water. These can be special stones or minerals, metal ionizer sticks and mineral supplements in the form of powder or drops, which should be added directly to a glass of water. Water is considered alkaline when its pH is 8.5-10. When used regularly on an empty stomach for at least three months, it can:

  • reduce inflammation;
  • have an antioxidant effect;
  • favorably affect the intestinal microflora;
  • normalize blood sugar levels;
  • promote rapid recovery from physical exertion.

If you look at the composition of alkalizing water and alkalizing supplements, it often includes basic minerals (potassium and sodium) in prophylactic, that is, small amounts. Similar ingredients, but in more serious dosages, can be found in pharmacy preparations against dehydration, which are prescribed for food poisoning.

The task of all these remedies is the same – to deliver to the body the minimum necessary minerals to restore dehydration and, as a consequence, to stimulate cellular metabolism (nutrition and purification at the cellular level).

And about what happens if you drink water on an empty stomach, see the video “Championship”.

Who needs to alkalize water?

If the body is healthy, this basic physiological process does not require supplements or special alkalizing water. It is enough to monitor the health of the liver and kidneys (the main organs of detox), not to overuse red meat, alcohol and coffee, and to include as many greens, vegetables and clean drinking water in the diet as possible.

Nevertheless, alkaline water can be an additional aid during treatment and recovery. Especially if you are characterized by:

  • chronic overwork and stress;
  • working in hazardous industries, interacting with chemicals;
  • living in areas with poor ecology;
  • improper nutrition, bad habits.
