Useful properties of dandelions

Ekaterina Stetsenko

doctor-endocrinologist, nutritionist of the clinic Medical On Group (Medscan Group) in the city of Podolsk

“As a medicinal remedy, all parts of the dandelion are used, each of which has maximum benefit in a particular month.”

Dandelion has many useful properties – it affects digestion, appetite, has choleretic properties. The choleretic effect of dandelion is due to the glycoside taraxacerin contained in it. Therefore, it is used to treat cholecystitis and gallstone disease.

The plant also has a positive effect on the visual system: due to the high content of lutein, zeaxanthin and B-carotene. B-carotene is also a strong antioxidant and supports the health of the skin and mucous membranes.

The high vitamin C and P content allows dandelion to be used for varicose veins and thrombosis. It also has diuretic properties, increases urine production, while still having hypotonic and bactericidal properties.

In patients with diabetes, the plant lowers sugar levels, normalizes the intestinal microflora. This is due to the content of inulin – a type of soluble fiber.

In addition, dandelion contains vitamins A, K, group B, iron, potassium, calcium, manganese.

“Dandelion contains a rich complex of biologically active substances, including flavonoids, carotenoids and phytosterols. These components have antibacterial properties, making dandelion an effective remedy for fighting bacteria in the oral cavity. Regular use of the plant prevents tooth decay and gum disease.”

Gum diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis are often accompanied by inflammation. Dandelion has anti-inflammatory properties due to the presence of polyphenols and flavonoids.

I would recommend using an extract of this plant to those who are facing gum problems, it will reduce their bleeding and swelling, as well as reduce inflammation. Brew the dried leaves and roots to get a flavorful and healthy drink that can be consumed daily.

The components of dandelion strengthen tooth enamel. This is important for preventing tooth decay and overall dental health. The extracts of the plant also help in natural whitening. They reduce stains on teeth left by coffee, tea, and other beverages or foods. Dandelion-based solutions can be used as mouthwashes or as an addition to toothpaste.

Harmful properties and contraindications

Despite the many useful properties, dandelion has contraindications to use. For example, in the presence of stones in the biliary tract, the condition can be aggravated. In gastritis with hyperacidity and peptic ulcer disease to use the plant is also not allowed, because it increases the production of hydrochloric acid.

It is not recommended to use it and with allergies to dandelion, as well as to velvets and chrysanthemums. You should not eat it during pregnancy.

According to Ekaterina Stetsenko, dandelion, like other herbal remedies, it is better to start taking with minimal portions, focusing on individual tolerance.

Use of dandelion in cooking and medicine

Nutriciologist of the online store of vitamins and dietary supplements Well Be

“Dandelion can be consumed in various forms. From the leaves, flowers and roots prepare salads, soups, also tea and tinctures.”

According to the expert, you can make a delicious salad from young dandelion leaves. To do this, you will need leaves (100 g), green onions (25 g), sauerkraut (50 g), boiled egg (1 pc.). Ingredients need to be chopped, mixed, and as a dressing you can use olive oil or Greek yogurt.

From the dandelion, a drink similar to coffee is prepared. The roots of the plant accumulate up to 40% of the prebiotic inulin, protein and tannins by fall. The roasted and ground roots are used as a healthy alternative to coffee.

The open flowers with lots of fragrant pollen can be used in making jam, and the spring leaves can be pickled like cabbage.

Another name for dandelion is “milkweed.” Because of its high antioxidant and flavonoid content, it is used to create creams and lotions.

As a medicinal remedy, a decoction or tincture of the root, collections with dried leaves or the root crushed into a powder are used. Local application of such a powder helps with wounds, burns and eczema.

Despite all its advantages, dandelion has a number of contraindications. Therefore, before using it, you should consult a doctor.
