Sergey Mysovsky. Don’t skate, we will get more waves

On July 26 in the Baltic Sea water area the first stage of Bulli Surf Cup took place, which includes the official Russian surfing championship in the discipline “long board” and All-Russian competitions in the discipline “short board”. In the near future St. Petersburg will take up the baton. On the eve of the start of professional and amateur surfers we had a chance to talk to Sergey Mysovsky, the winner of SupDay Open Sprint last year.

What is surfing?
– Surfing is when people slide on a wave and they enjoy it.

What are the main differences between surfing and kitesurfing, wakeboarding and sup-surfing?
– Surfing is the most minimalistic and unpretentious of all these sports. You basically only need a board and a wave.

What kind of board riding is the most popular in our country?
– At the moment, I think it is snowboarding. Since, given the peculiarities of the climate, we have a long winter and a lot of snow.

What kind of “skating” is the most acceptable in the realities of our country?
– If we take water skiing, then, in my opinion, it is kitesurfing and sup.

Where to skate in Russia?
– In Russia, in fact, you can ride anywhere where there is water. For example, you can surf in St. Petersburg, Vladivostok, Kaliningrad, Kamchatka and other cities. For kitesurfing in general, any body of water is suitable, the main thing is that there is wind.

You travel a lot, can you make up your top 5 locations for surfing (not only in our country) and briefly note what attracts you in each of them?
– Mauritius – safety in the water and on land. Empty linups and beautiful nature.
Portugal – lots of empty linapes and wonderful culture.
Costa Rica – unreal nature and lots of empty steep waves.
Indonesia – a mecca of left-handed waves for all tastes.
USA – the place to upgrade your level.

– Sup-surfing – a phenomenon for our country is quite new. If we compare it, for example, with the same wakeboarding, sup is spread in more localized communities. What do you think this is due to?
– Like any new sport, it needs time to make itself known. I’m sure sup will “shoot up” very well. This sport is more budget-friendly and it’s easier for people to try it and start practicing as it doesn’t require a huge investment.

Who can enjoy sup surfing?
– Absolutely everyone from small to large. I don’t know who might not like it… Although no – I do! ZANUDAM!

What conditions do you need to stand up sup?
– You need smooth water, a sup board with a paddle and a person who will give a couple of tips.

On August 26 in St. Petersburg, on the beach Laskovy, in the framework of the festival Locals Only will be held sup-surfing championship – “5th Ocean”. Competitions will be held in the most spectacular and exciting discipline “sprint slalom”. Every fan of sup-surfing will be able to take part in the competition. Registration and details.

What does surfing mean to you personally?
– To be honest, it is always very difficult to answer this question. Surfing is a way of life, a philosophy of its own, and it’s already so firmly integrated into my life that I can’t imagine myself without it. Surfing is very important to me because it’s not just a sport, it’s a whole life.

How did your development as a surf athlete begin?
– At first I was skateboarding, then I switched to snowboarding and at some point I decided to try my hand at kitesurfing. And that’s where it all started.

– Why surfing? Was there or maybe there is some other sport that accompanies you in life and in which you develop?
– Yes, I do kitesurfing in parallel. Last year I took 7th place at the World Championship.

What muscle groups are developed while practicing on the board?
– In general, all muscles are involved. You have to paddle, then quickly jump on the board and control it while gliding. Surfing is a great sport to keep all your muscles toned at all times, because you’re working your whole body.

– How long is the “riding” season? How do you keep fit between training sessions?
– The season lasts all year round, but when I have breaks, I do boxing and rock climbing.

If you could do only one thing that could greatly popularize surfing as a sport in our country, what would it be?
– We should show on Channel One how Putin cuts Trump off in a wave and then rides in a tube and surfs out, ripping his calfskin.
