What is spirulina and why do you need it? The algae is often added to PP smoothies

Why is spirulina added to food? What is the usefulness of spirulina?

Let’s find out together with a nutritionist.

In many fitness bars you can notice an unusual cocktail with a greenish-blue color. This color is given to the drink by a special ingredient known as spirulina. Although the superfood became popular relatively recently, it is about 3.5 billion years old. It is believed to have been a major source of protein for the Aztecs. According to legend, marathon runners of the tribe took spirulina before races – so they increased their endurance. What else is the product useful for?

Spirulina can be called one of the oldest marine organisms, which for many centuries of existence has acquired a unique biochemical composition.

In one tablespoon of spirulina (approximately 7 g):

  • 20 kcal;
  • 4 g protein;
  • 1 g fat;
  • 2 g carbohydrates;
  • 0.3 g fiber.

Spirulina is one of the leading superfoods. It is produced from blue-green filamentous algae that grows in tropical lakes in Africa and Mexico. The algae was discovered in the 17th century, but its beneficial properties were discovered much later. Spirulina contains more than 2500 amino acids, useful substances and vitamins.

What is useful spirulina?

If we talk about spirulina as a superfood, it is very different from other products (greens, fruits, berries). For example, beta-carotene, which is subsequently converted into vitamin A, in spirulina is more than in carrots or pumpkin. Also, the product contains about 70% vegetable protein (pure protein), that is, its nutritional value is several times higher than nuts, legumes and green vegetables. One tablespoon of dried algae is 200-300% of the daily allowance of vitamin B12. The benefits of spirulina are also that it:

  • Strengthens the immune system by increasing the body’s production of cytokines – protein molecules that fight viruses and infections.
  • Reduces tumor growth and counteracts free radicals.
  • Helps you tolerate allergies more easily: even 2 g of the product per day significantly reduces symptoms such as sneezing, stuffiness and itching.
  • Increases stamina and training efficiency.
  • Promotes the growth of healthy microflora in the intestines.

Gennady: Algae also plays a huge role in the creation of anti-aging cosmetics. Spirulina can be used both as a food supplement and, for example, as an addition to the cream. It is better to use it in tablets, because the natural flavor of spirulina is not the most pleasant. Despite this, the product contributes to the elimination of bad breath. This is due to the fact that spirulina chlorophyll has a deodorizing effect. In this case, there are practically no contraindications to the use of spirulina. But before using it, it is better to consult with a specialist.
