Why is it dangerous to sleep without a pillow? How does quality sleep affect health? And why those who are engaged in sports should necessarily analyze the quality of sleep?

Quality healthy sleep is the key to the proper functioning of the entire body. When it is disrupted, recovery processes are disturbed, and the work of organ systems in a chain reaction can fail – visible or imperceptible. Professional athletes and amateurs who exercise regularly need to know:

  • During sleep, thanks to the production of somatotropin (growth hormone), tissues damaged by training are repaired and new bone and muscle tissues are built.
  • The hormone cortisol, on the other hand, destroys muscle tissue and slows recovery. Its reactive production is triggered by lack of sleep.
  • Insomnia threatens obesity. If cortisol is in excess and melatonin is not enough, metabolism is disrupted and fat deposition increases.
  • Studies prove that the performance and productivity of athletes is influenced by quality sleep.

During sleep, the immune system is fully working, respectively, with its lack, it is more difficult for the body to fight viruses and infections.

Snoring can worsen or simply reappear even in those who have never snored before. Without a pillow, the head is tilted: in this position, the tongue blocks the flow of air to the airways, and the vessels are in a compressed state.

The only people who need to sleep without a pillow are infants. They need it for the correct formation of the curves of the spine and strengthening of the neck muscles. Doctors recommend laying babies without additional neck support until they reach six months of age.

For adults, experts advise sleeping on pillows. But if you choose between sleeping without a pillow and sleeping on a low-quality pillow, the first is better. The fact is that each person, depending on his physiological features, requires specific support for the neck. And you need to look for orthopedic or anatomical products. You can do without the usual, but high-quality, so do not neglect the help of specialists.
