Bicycle vs rollerblades. Choosing the best means of transportation

If you like to walk in the park, you’ve probably noticed that the vast majority of people choose rollerblades or bicycles to get around. We decided to find out what benefits these modes of transportation bring and why exactly do people like them so much?

Bike

Calorie expenditure:

Cycling is a good way to control weight as it increases your metabolic rate, builds muscle and burns fat. But, not surprisingly, if you’re trying to lose weight, the rides should be combined with a healthy eating plan.

According to Harvard University, riding a bicycle at an average speed of 19 to 22 kilometers per hour will cause a person weighing 70 pounds to burn 298 calories in 30 minutes. At a speed of 22 to 24 kilometers per hour, a person of the same weight would burn 372 calories.

Engaged muscles:

The main muscles engaged during cycling are the quadriceps muscles of the hips and hamstrings in the upper leg, and the calf and hamstring muscles of the lower leg. When you ride a bike, the quadriceps and hamstrings do most of the work.

Cycling is also a great cardio workout. Regular cycling stimulates and improves your heart, lungs and circulation, reducing the risk of stroke, high blood pressure and heart attack. Your heart muscles are strengthened and your resting heart rate is lowered.

Additional benefits:

Cycling improves strength, balance, and coordination. It can also help prevent falls and fractures. Cycling is an ideal form of exercise if you have osteoarthritis, as there is little strain on your joints.

Aside from the obvious health benefits, cycling is fun with family or friends. There are two-seater, three-seater and even four-seater tandems for riding together.

Makar, a fourth-year student, prefers bicycles to rollerblades and other forms of transportation:

“I have flat feet. For this reason I can’t ride rollerblades or even a scooter or skateboard for a long time. A bicycle is convenient because there is no heavy strain on my feet, and I can sit.”

Rollerblades

Calorie expenditure:

A leisurely 30-minute rollerblading on the boulevard will burn 250 calories!
So if you exercise for 30 minutes five times a week, you’ll burn about 1,250 calories. Together with a reduced diet, this will help you lose half a pound to a pound a week.

Muscles involved:

The benefit of rollerblading is that it’s a full-body workout, although of course there are some areas and muscle groups that are most involved when rollerblading. Increasing your body strength through roller skating will also improve your coordination, help prevent injuries, and help you stay more active and flexible as you get older.

Roller skating is much more than just a cardio workout. In addition to losing weight, you can also build muscle mass. After every walk on roller skates, you will notice results. Your buttocks, thighs, as well as calves will always be toned.

Additional benefits:

Apart from the obvious benefits of roller skating for physical health, there are also benefits for a person’s mental state. Such walks clear the mind, minimize mild forms of depression and simply make you happy.

Elizaveta, a 3rd year student, considers rollerblading the best way to relieve emotional stress:

“It’s great when you go in the evening, along the park and think about everything in the world. About problems, about how they can be solved, you realize that, in fact, all this means nothing, and that you can cope with everything. In general, I love sports, but sometimes I can be very lazy to go to the gym or just work out at home, then I take out my rollerblades and go for a ride. You sweat very well, your legs fall off afterwards.

So what is better?

In this case, the choice should be made based on your personal preferences and feelings. Rollerblading is more difficult to learn to ride than bicycling, but it slightly outweighs bicycling in terms of benefits to the body, simply because more muscles are involved.

However, in terms of calories shed and the effect on the body, especially the heart, these modes of transportation are almost no different. You can go to a sports store and choose what you like, knowing that your body will thank you for it.
