Is there an upside to coronavirus? Environmental impact

The situation cleared the air over China, and dolphins came to Venice.

The current situation in the world arouses a lot of emotions, and, of course, leads to horror. But, as experts note, the epidemic is slowly coming to naught in China, and scientists are close to discovering the long-awaited vaccine. These facts can not but be happy. One more positive moment is worth mentioning. Due to the fact that many countries have introduced restrictive measures for people to stay outdoors, nature has been transformed and breathed a breath of really fresh air.

Clear skies over China

“Satellite images have shown a sharp drop in air pollution in China, which is “at least partly” due to a slowdown in economic growth due to a new coronavirus,” BBC News reported, citing NASA data.

Because of the epidemic, Chinese authorities have had to close most factories and plants that emit nitrogen dioxide into the air. This chemical is one of the most common pollutants today. Such poisonous gas was emitted by transportation and industrial facilities.

Transparent water in Venice

Many scientists claim that Italy has become a new hotbed for the spread of the coronavirus. Hundreds of medics in hospitals are fighting for people’s lives and trying to defeat the disease. However, here too, the virus has taken its toll on the environment. In Venice, for the first time in many years, the water in the canals became transparent. Fish and white swans have appeared in them.

“Since there is no boat traffic, the white swans are back. This is priceless!” – wrote blogger Filterjm.

Italian residents believe nature is “coming alive again.” However, as Venice City Hall explained to CNN, the appearance of the fish and the return of the swans is primarily due to worsening tourism and lack of water transportation. The authorities also explained that due to the decrease in the number of boats and vaporettos (Venetian river streetcars – ed.), the sediment has sunk to the bottom, so the water looks cleaner.
