What is the harm of cold brew coffee?

Cold brew coffee seems to be the perfect option for those who want an energy boost on a sweltering day. In the summer, coffee drinkers are eager to choose cool cold brulee and frappe over hot cappuccinos and lattes. Skillful baristas also add juices, syrups and ice cream, turning a cold drink into a dessert that’s hard to pass up. Together with nutriciologist Lidia Kvashnina, we tell you what it costs to replace hot coffee with cold coffee.

In my opinion, cold coffee is not the best drink for hot summer because of its high sugar, ice and caffeine content. To many, these ingredients can be consumed with caution.

But we must not forget that caffeine in any form is addictive and disturbs sleep. In addition, it is contraindicated in:

  • pregnancy;
  • increased anxiety and general restlessness;
  • irritability and aggressiveness;
  • arrhythmia;
  • sleep disorders.

It is not recommended to drink coffee more than 3-4 cups a day and later than 16:00.

Can coffee be too cold?

An obvious plus of cold coffee – it helps to cool the body in hot weather. However, it should not be overdone. Nutriciologists do not recommend drinking beverages with a temperature below 12 degrees.

More often cold coffee is served with ice. And drinks with a temperature below 12-15 degrees subject the gastrointestinal tract to increased stress. They slow down digestive processes and block the ability of enzymes to effectively break down food.

The most unfortunate option is cream, ice cream or fatty milk. The fact is that milk fat stimulates the gallbladder, and caffeine simultaneously prevents its contraction. Because of this, there is a failure in the work of the organs of the gastrointestinal tract.

The other additives are often sugar or its synthetic substitutes. Their excessive use leads to obesity, increased risk of cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes.

I would definitely not mix coffee with cream, cow’s milk, honey and sugar. It is better to add turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, lemon or orange to the drink.
