Chasing the odds: Guinness World Records, prophetic dreams and voodoo magic

Any search engine on the request “betting” will give you not only the sites of bookmaker’s offices, but also a huge number of all kinds of forecasts, strategies, “experts on match-fixing”. But as it turns out, it is not necessary to use all this to win big. We have collected for you the stories of people who earned record amounts thanks to betting.

Guinness Record

The bet with the highest odds in history was made in England in 1929. Catherine Unsworth bet on the results of all the races. The ratio was 1:3410, the chances of winning were minimal. But she wasn’t wrong in any of her guesses. But judging by the fact that the amount she risked was only 10 pence, she didn’t use any betting strategies.

Sounds nice

It is quite possible that the heroine of the previous story used the same method as her compatriot. This time it’s about our contemporary. A 59-year-old resident of Sheppey decided to bet on the victory of 12 clubs. She was not interested in soccer, so she chose the winner depending on whose name she liked more. In the end, 11 of the 12 clubs were not favorites. Her winnings amounted to £574k, with the coupon that brought her the winnings worth 574k times less.

He’s from the future

What guided the hero of this story, it is difficult to say, but he bet on the qualifying games for the World Cup 2010. 14 matches, in each of them the fan indicated not only the winner, but also the exact score, the coefficient turned out unimaginable: 209 856. But what is even more unimaginable is that he never made a single mistake! All the results he gave were correct, including Portugal’s defeat to Denmark. Looks like Marty McFly used the almanac this time after all.

The déjà vu effect

Many people believe that every dream they have means something, so they look for the interpretation of each symbol in special books. Adrian Hayward apparently believes that dreams should be taken literally. So if you dream that a player of your team scores from the center of the field, run to the bookmaker’s office. That’s exactly what he did, and he had to wait until January. At the time, Xabi Alonso was a Liverpool player, and in an FA Cup match against Luton Town made Adrian happiest of all, turning his £200 into £25k.

Most loyal fan

To bet on your country’s national team winning any tournament, you have to love and believe in it very much, especially if you live in Greece. In 2004 the whole world found out that there is at least one such fan among the Greeks. The odds on them winning the Euros before the quarter-finals were 50, but that didn’t stop the fan. He bet four thousand pounds. Before the semi-final and final, when the odds dropped to 10, he made several more bets totaling over 20 thousand pounds. After winning the final, Greeks all over the world cried tears of happiness, and one of them also became 332 thousand pounds richer.

Voodoo magic

To catch huge odds, you don’t necessarily have to bet on several matches. This story happened in 2010, in the first match of the Africa Cup of Nations – the hosts of the tournament – the national team of Angola won against Mali with a score of 4:0 in the 74th minute. At that moment, some people in Germany, Moldova, Cyprus and several other countries bet on the outcome that Mali would not lose, the odds were 1:1000. Despite the fact that several people around the same time had bet quite substantial sums on a Mali victory, the match was investigated. The commission conducted an investigation in which they ruled that the match was fair. The truth will probably never be known, but it is always nice to revisit the match, and doubly nice for those who made good money from it.
