On April 19, the national final of the world championship in launching paper airplanes – Red Bull Paper Wings– took place in the capital. According to its results the names of the strongest pilots who will represent our country at the international final in Austria in May became known.

What was evaluated?

RB Paper Wings is an international championship for launching paper airplanes, held in 2019 after a four-year break for the fifth time. The competition includes three disciplines:

  • “Flight Range”, where the distance traveled by the paper airplane is evaluated;
  • “Duration of flight” – the participant whose airplane will stay in the air longer than the others wins;
  • “Aerobatics” – where the focus is on the originality of the design, flight trajectory, as well as the show built around the launch of the airplane.

Qualifiers for the first two disciplines took place inside university campuses.

Briefly about the rules and the selection stage

The participants assembled their paper airplanes strictly on the site, adhering to several conditions: the airplane must be made of one sheet of A4 paper weighing no more than 100 grams, the paper can be folded, but cannot be cut, torn or glued.

In total, students from 21 universities from six Russian cities took part in the selections: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Rostov-on-Don, Kazan, Yekaterinburg and Vladivostok. The winners of each university gathered in Moscow on April 19 to compete for the title of national champions and get the opportunity to go to the world final.
