How does fish oil affect the body and why is it necessary?

Many people associate fish oil with an unpleasant taste and smell from their childhood, when under strict parental supervision they had to drink it with meals. Childhood is gone, but the habit of drinking fish oil remains. Today it is produced in capsules, which makes it much easier to use. Expert nutritionist Vlada Grishkevich and cosmetologist Elena Gretsova tell us more about the benefits of fish oil.

What is fish oil?

It is an animal fat contained in and extracted from fish. Fish oil contains polyunsaturated acids omega-3 and omega-6, as well as vitamins A and D.

Vlada: The human body cannot synthesize omega-3 and omega-6 unsaturated acids on its own. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to get them from the diet or in the form of supplements.

How does fish oil affect the appearance?

Doctors and cosmetologists often advise taking fish oil for the health and beauty of the skin, as well as for strengthening hair and nails. And manufacturers of anti-aging care products often include omega-3 in their products.

Skin cleansing

Elena: It is proven that the substance [fish oil] reduces inflammatory processes in the skin, restores the integrity of the epidermal barrier. Externally, this is expressed in the reduction of redness, flaking and irritation of the skin.

Omega-3 unsaturated acids, which are part of fish oil, contribute to the reduction of acne and serve as its prevention.

Strengthening of hair and nails

Cosmetologist notes that fish oil has a beneficial effect on the whole body, in particular on the skin and its derivatives – nails and hair. The product promotes their growth and makes them stronger.

Weight control

Fish oil is also useful during sports to build muscle mass. And for those who are losing weight, it will help reduce fat deposits by speeding up metabolism.

How does fish oil affect health?

Fish oil is great for those who want to improve the condition of skin, hair and nails. However, its beneficial properties are not limited to this. Omega-3 affects vital organs and helps in the prevention of many diseases.

Vlada: Omega-3 is the most important factor in human health. All organ systems depend on optimal levels of these acids in the body.

Nervous system

The human brain is made up of 60 percent omega-3 fatty acids, notes the nutritionist. When they are lacking in the diet, first of all, brain function suffers. A person immediately falls into the risk group of dangerous diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, Parkinson’s disease and others.

Cardiovascular system

Vlada: Omega-3 helps prevent atherosclerotic formations, helps lower cholesterol and thin the blood.

Vision

Omega-3 acids are also essential for healthy eyes. They prevent age-related retinal degeneration and other vision-related diseases.

What contraindications does fish oil have?

Despite all the beneficial properties of fish oil, you should not forget about precautions.

Among the contraindications cosmetologist calls:

  • Acute and chronic liver and kidney diseases;
  • prolonged intoxication;
  • pregnancy and lactation;
  • diseases of the thyroid gland (thyrotoxicosis).

In case of overdose of the drug, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, headache may occur.

When to take fish oil?

Cosmetologist advises to additionally take fish oil in the fall and winter period, when there is a seasonal decrease in immunity. However, in some indications, the reception does not depend on the time of year. In any case, use fish oil in the form of capsules or vitamins should be strictly under the supervision of a doctor.
