Why do you feel like eating less often? This usually happens as you get older

Why does the appetite disappear in old age? How does the feeling of hunger change with age?

Let’s find out together with a nutritionist and a geneticist.

Many people know that taste preferences change with age. But few people understand why. The clue lies in the complex mechanism of appetite, which, it turns out, ages with us.

Loss of appetite mainly concerns those who “age inside”, who are not interested in sports and their health.

How are food habits and appetite formed?

Food habits, and at the same time appetite, depend largely on the innate features of the body, which builds the attitude to food already from childhood. There is a gene responsible for the feeling of satiety, and it works differently in each person. That is why some are endowed with a sense of proportion and are able to determine “their” portion of food, and others – not. The latter may have a “blurred” feeling of satiety from the amount of food eaten from birth, and therefore a more developed sense of hunger.

Unfortunately, problems with these traits can increase with age. This often develops into eating disorders, leading to weight gain and early obesity. Diets are usually ineffective with this problem and only make things worse. Therefore, it is very important to know your metabolic peculiarities, build a diet and lifestyle, taking into account individual characteristics.

How do preferences change with age?

At each of the “age” stages, the body requires a certain level of building material and energy to ensure vital activity. But let’s talk about everything in order.

Olga: Vitamins and minerals are very important during this period, especially if physical activity has started to appear in your life. An important role in the presence of appetite plays and psycho-emotional state of a person – it determines the level of various hormones. Therefore, “youthful depression” also affects the biochemistry, reducing the level of thyroid hormone, serotonin. This can lead to a loss of interest in life, and with it a decrease in appetite. Also in the first decades of a person’s life, eating habits are formed, which largely depend on the example of parents.

Maturity

During this period comes “awareness” and understanding of what and when to eat. At this stage, we continue to explore the world, many have children – and appetite is most often at its peak. The presence of physical activity also plays an important role here. After all, sport supports a good appetite. If the loads are average, then the appetite will be the same.

In general, the loss of appetite at this stage of life mainly concerns those who are “aging inside”, who are not interested in sports and their health. Yet appetite is not only about biochemical processes in the body, but also about self-perception.

Olga: The sooner you realize what food is for and what is its meaning – the “healthier and more beautiful” will be your physical shape. The sooner you realize that mood and appetite are also interconnected – the easier it will be to go through life. At a conscious age, a person can form the right eating behavior, which helps to maintain health. And don’t forget that regular activity improves appetite.
