Why don’t fitness trainers sometimes look like the athletes from the covers?

How to choose a fitness trainer? How much do gym-goers care about the instructor’s appearance?

Trainers and gym customers answer.

Passing by a newsstand, probably many of us have thought that we want the same body as the athletes from the covers of magazines. Of course, with high physical activity, regular training and a balanced diet, this goal is achievable. But for this you need to choose a good trainer.

Let’s find out who is a “good coach” and by what criteria he should be chosen.

Elena Skoblova

supervisor and master trainer of the World Class gym.

Let’s immediately distinguish the concepts of sport and fitness. Sport is about achievements, competitions, professional activity. Fitness is about lifestyle and lifestyle in general, and about healthy lifestyle.
A sportsman looks the way the specifics of a particular sport dictate, and not always everyone likes it. And for photo shoots many people are often prepared almost as for competitions, and to live in such a form all the time is not always possible.

Why do trainers sometimes have a non-ideal figure?

There are a large number of reasons why your fitness trainer is not in the best shape right now. After all, he or she is also a human being who goes through different periods in life.

The process of recovering from a serious injury

Some trainers are also athletes, so they can get injured at any time. For example, a person has been working towards a perfect figure for several years, but at some point after an unsuccessful jump, the cruciate ligaments of the knee ruptured, requiring surgery. Then a long period of recovery, in which the trainer managed not to lose motivation, and here he is back in the line, but no longer with such an ideal figure.

Studying fitness from a scientific point of view

Perhaps, now the trainer with his head immersed in the study of the structure of the human body. He wants to know everything about how to make training as safe as possible for the ward, and reads a lot of scientific literature. Such an instructor is a theorist, but also a professional.

The client comes first

A fitness trainer wants to help a large number of people become physically better and healthier. He has six to nine clients a day, and there is no time left for himself. For an instructor, the results of his students are more important than his own.

Does the number of clients depend on the appearance of the trainer?

In today’s world it is customary to choose “by the cover”. This applies to food, books and, unfortunately, people. But is it possible to adhere to this rule when entering a gym? The answer is: you shouldn’t. After all, as practice shows, a fitness trainer with a “non-sporting” physical form can have many more clients than a real athlete, because it’s far from that.

Elena: Sometimes the number of clients may depend on the appearance of the trainer, but it should absolutely not be the first priority. Appearance absolutely does not reflect professional competence and knowledge, not even always shows the development of physical qualities. So, for example, a trainer can look good, but be not strong or unbearable.

How do gym-goers feel about an “unsportsmanlike” trainer?

A fitness trainer says that sometimes clients are biased towards trainers who are far from ideal, but this is the wrong approach.

Elena: Firstly, we do not know the peculiarities of a person, maybe it is now the period of his not the best form for objective reasons. Secondly, it is worth distinguishing between “bodypositive” self-acceptance and unhealthiness. From the trainer, who a month ago successfully performed in the fitness bikini category, and then had a hormonal failure and gained a lot of weight, in one day will not run away all the students, if she is a competent trainer and a professional. And, I repeat, the coach must first of all be a qualified specialist, not a performing athlete.

Is a good coach a stylish coach?

If you can’t choose a coach based on his physical fitness, then maybe the best coach is the one who is dressed the most stylishly? As it turns out, this method is also wrong and should not be followed.

Elena: In general, in the fitness industry there are no rules related to clothing, it is all dictated within a particular club or a particular company. But, of course, the form of clothing while in the gym should be sporty, moderate makeup, jewelry and other small things that should be worn according to the rules of service.

And what do visitors think about it?

In such a sensitive issue, it is important to know the opinion of gym visitors as well. We talked to fitness journalist Timur Siraziev and Alexei Arzhankin, a professional athlete and fighter.

Timur Siraziev

fitness journalist

The appearance of the coach, of course, is important, but is not fundamental. The situation here, I think, is similar to the way we choose a boyfriend or girlfriend. The first thing you look at is appearance, but you also realize that you have to live not only with the appearance, but also with the character and habits of your partner.

Alexey Arzhankin

professional fighter

The appearance of the trainer for me is important, but not paramount. Choose a fitness trainer not necessarily by the “cover”, maybe now a person does not have the opportunity to maintain his physical shape.

Alexei: The main thing is to move according to your inner feelings, you must “feel” your teacher.
Perhaps the models on the covers of magazines are not trainers, but models. You should always distinguish a model from an ordinary person or from a coach. Modeling is a job related to keeping up appearances!

Here’s what our experts have to say on this topic. What do you think about it?
