A doctor-somnologist told on which side it is healthier to sleep on and why

Everyone knows that sleep is the key to good health. But many people forget that not only the amount of time allotted for rest is important, but also its quality. The position of the body at night is responsible for this.

Irina Korobkova

psychiatrist, psychotherapist, somnologist, Candidate of Medical Sciences.

There is an opinion that there are right and wrong postures for sleep. What does science say about this?

On the back

The most physiological position is considered to be on the back. However, it is dangerous for snoring people and those who suffer from night apnea syndrome (sleep apnea). The fact is that during sleep all the muscles of the body relax, including the tongue. Because of this, it falls down under the influence of gravity.

This can provoke snoring. And also block the airways and cause apnea. People who suffer from a runny nose, it is also not recommended to sleep on the back. So overnight in the sinuses will accumulate mucus.

On your stomach

Sleeping on the stomach is considered less physiological, because in this position the spine is unsupported, and the head is turned to the side – this is an unnatural body position. The only plus is that the person snores less. If you still like to sleep like this, then to preserve the position of the neck, choose a very low pillow.

The doctor told what is dangerous to sleep on the stomach and to whom it will not harm, in the material.

On the side

Sleeping on the side suits most people. Why? It does not cause pain in the back and neck, does not contribute to snoring due to open airways, through which smoothly and evenly flows oxygen.

The opinion that while sleeping on the left side suffers the heart, and on the right side – the stomach, is a myth that has no scientific basis.

Most people are comfortable sleeping on their left side. Sleeping in this position has been proven to promote better digestion, reduce acid reflux and improve blood flow to vital organs such as the heart, liver and kidneys.

This posture affects the work of the lymphatic system. It flows into the thoracic duct, which is located on the left. This means that useful substances get into the lymph much faster. The spleen also works better, the blood flow to it increases.

Children, pregnant women and the elderly are also recommended to sleep on the side. But the choice of side depends on the individual comfort level. But expectant mothers are better suited to the position on the left side, as it improves blood circulation of the fetus.

However, some people still find it more comfortable to sleep on the right side. Due to this position reduces the likelihood of acid reflux and heartburn. But there are also significant contraindications.

It should be remembered that constant sleeping on the right side can put pressure on the liver, causing discomfort, potentially affecting the work of the organ. It also negatively affects the autonomic nervous system.

What conclusion can be drawn? Sleeping on your left side will be preferable to sleeping on your right side.
