How to run when it’s slippery? Solving the problem together with the coach

How do you run when it's slippery?

It is possible to continue training in any weather conditions. But is it necessary?

Ice is not the best time for running. But what do you do if you want to train in any season? How to reduce the risk of injury and slipping, we’ll talk to runner and coach of the Running Community Pavel Kondrashev.

What is fraught with falling while running?

The most obvious – you can get an injury, such as a bruise or pull a muscle or ligament. You should be extremely careful if you run on uneven or slippery surfaces, you should always look under your feet.

If you suddenly fell or felt discomfort during training, do not self-medicate. It is better to see a therapist, or even better, a sports doctor. The specialist will help to prescribe special treatment and adjust the training plan, select a rehabilitation program. Remember that pain should not be tolerated. If you ignore the injury, the situation can worsen.

Such symptoms as swelling, restriction of mobility, hematoma, can be and at a fracture, and at a muscle tear, and at other traumatic injuries. Only an experienced doctor will be able to choose the right rehabilitation program.

What kind of shoes will you need to slip less?

To reduce the risk of injury while running in the winter, it is worth paying special attention to the equipment and the choice of shoes.
In winter, ordinary highway sneakers with smooth tread will be suitable for asphalt. If you run on uneven and slippery surfaces – it is better to choose sneakers with spikes and hard tread. It is also important that the shoes have a waterproof membrane. So your feet will be warm and dry even in the nastiest weather.

Is it worth it to run in icy conditions?

I don’t see much point in running in heavy ice, as you won’t be able to do a good workout. If the weather conditions raise doubts, I recommend to adjust the training plan and move the training session to the arena.

How can I reduce the risk of injury?

Choose a smoother and less slippery surface for your upcoming workout. Preferably, the entire course should be well lit so you can see all the pits, bumps and ice. Choose equipment and shoes according to the weather – clothes should not constrain your movements, and shoes should have good traction. Also before jogging you should do a good warm-up to warm up all the muscles. Well, and, of course, I recommend training under the guidance of an experienced trainer. He will be able to follow the correct technique of exercises and adjust the training process to the weather conditions.
