International Boxing Day: what did it give to our closet?

What do we have in common with the great Mohammed Ali and Mike Tyson?

We look for similarities together with a stylist-image-maker.

Recently, the president of the International Boxing Association (AIBA) Umar Kremlin told about the postponement of the celebration of International Boxing Day from July 22 to August 27. This happened due to the fact that the first world boxing championship was once held on this day. We will tell you how boxing influenced our closet and what things are in trend now.

It’s hard to imagine what we haven’t borrowed from athletes’ outfits. We wear sweatshirts, baseball caps, polo shirts, tennis bracelets in everyday life. We love sportswear for its comfort and ergonomics, and also for how cool it looks in everyday life.

Boxer Shorts

The times when boxer shorts were an attribute of exclusively sporty closet are long gone. Today, with regularity, brands bring boxers to the catwalks in a variety of variants: from mini versions and cotton textures to obvious variants straight from the ring, such as Versace’s.

Designers accurately declare that these shorts have a great future, and now that convenience and comfort are valued above all else due to prolonged self-isolation, athletic shorts have become a must have element of women’s and men’s closet.

Women’s tops-bra

The times have come when girls can wear cropped tops not only within the confines of their apartments, but also combine them with other closet elements in the daily dress code. And women’s boxing has greatly helped modern girls wear tops without fear of judgment.

The most famous female boxers wear tops and bralettes not only for training and performances in the rings, but also in ordinary life. For example, the daughter of American boxer Mohammed Ali – Leila Ali – has created her own brand of sportswear, which produces, among other things, tops in basic colors that are suitable for training in the gym and for going out.

Silk robe

The robe is a favorite item of clothing not only for Ilya Ilyich Oblomov, but also for modern fashionistas. And it was boxing that helped to introduce this piece of clothing into everyday images. Athletes go out in it to the ring, weigh-ins and move around the venue. Boxing allowed us to go outside in silk robes, thus prolonging the life of pajama style. You can combine the robes with jeans and a tank top or replace them with dresses with a flare.

Sports shirts

Sports shirts, or, as they are commonly called, “alcoholics”, are worn by many athletes, but it was boxers who first put them on. T-shirts of this form are now the uniform of boxing representatives. And this summer they became the main element of street looks, and every trendsetter added them to his closet. They wear them with pants and loose jeans, bikinis and silk skirts.

We really borrowed a lot from boxers. Boxer shorts are replacing the worn-out biker shorts. The Hadid sisters are especially fond of them in their everyday looks. Sport tops and boxer shirts are especially loved by fashionistas. They are worn with jeans, skirts, tracksuits. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley can be considered the main lover of boxer shirts. But boxing robes are still inferior to kimono in popularity. Mostly we buy robes as home or beachwear.
