In what cases is it better to give up milk and what to replace it with?

Dairy products are part of the daily diet of most people. Milk-based porridge, sandwiches with butter, cottage cheese and yogurt are probably the most popular breakfast foods. But for some people, milk does more harm than good. What is the cause of this?

Causes of intolerance to whole milk and dairy products:

  • Lactase deficiency;
  • allergy to the whole milk protein casein;
  • urolithiasis;
  • obesity and metabolic problems;
  • cholelithiasis.

People with these problems should exclude milk from their diet or limit its consumption.

Lactase deficiency

Lactase deficiency is associated with a deficiency of lactase – an enzyme that breaks down milk sugar. In this case, the entire milk fat is not broken down and cannot be digested in the small intestine. The undigested carbohydrates enter the large intestine, where a fermentation reaction takes place with the participation of bacteria and the release of gases. This leads to symptoms such as:

  • intestinal bloating;
  • gastrointestinal discomfort;
  • diarrhea;
  • abdominal pain.

Allergy to milk protein

Allergy to cow’s milk protein is the second most popular reason for excluding dairy products from the diet. An allergic reaction occurs not only to cow’s milk, but also to the milk of goat, sheep, mare.

Typical manifestations of intolerance:

  • digestive disorders – constipation, diarrhea, vomiting;
  • skin rashes, hives, eczema;
  • respiratory manifestations – runny nose, sneezing, coughing, wheezing.

Allergy is manifested not only to whole milk, but also to those products where milk protein is not fermented and not broken down:

  • cream;
  • processed cheese and bryndza;
  • ghee and condensed milk.

Urolithiasis and nephropathy

With kidney pathologies, dairy products should be consumed with caution.

Fermented milk drinks have a high content of calcium and phosphorus, than provoke the formation of stones. In this case, kefir should be excluded from the diet.

High-protein dairy products (hard cheese and cottage cheese) are also dangerous for the kidneys because of the high protein content. Excessive protein load aggravates the condition: provokes inflammation, the development of urolithiasis.

Consumption of high-fat dairy products (sour cream over 20% fat, cream and fatty varieties of cheese) should also be reduced in people with obesity and a tendency to overweight.

How to replace milk and dairy products

Plant-based substitutes will be an alternative:

  • tofu cheese instead of regular cheeses;
  • soy, rice, almond or coconut milk;
  • coconut or soy yogurt;
  • coconut oil.

Plant foods do not irritate the digestive system, do not overload the kidneys, are well digested and help to restore the intestinal flora.
