Why is it so hard to wake up on Mondays and how to fix it? A somnologist tells us

What is weekend insomnia? How to recognize it and what to do about it?

Let’s find out together with a somnologist.

Many people are familiar with insomnia and have learned to take it for granted. Early rising, activities during the day, evenings with family and simple everyday life – all of this makes us feel tired not only “in the moment”, but also when we wake up the next day in the morning. However, few people know that this may be due to weekend insomnia.

There’s a reason weekend insomnia is otherwise known as social jetlag. Of course, you’re not flying anywhere. But society dictates its rules, and you, following them, violate the usual mode.

Moreover, knowing that we don’t have to get up early on Saturday, we can be engrossed in something for a long time. For example, watch a movie, sit in a gadget and fall asleep at two in the morning. Accordingly, the later we go to bed, the later we get up – not at the usual 7:00, but at best at 10:00.

How to recognize weekend insomnia?

Essentially, social jetlag has the same symptoms as regular jetlag. However, you don’t find out about it until Monday.

Daria: It will be hard to get out of bed because you have set your biological clock off. Over the weekend, your body felt like you flew to a country with a different time zone.

Of course, when we change the regime, we adjust to a new way of life, life according to a new time. And here it is Monday – and stress again, because the alarm clock rang not at 10:00, but again at 7:00.

Daria: You have slept well from Saturday to Sunday, and suddenly Monday comes. Your body needs 24 hours to adapt to the new time. Therefore, try to lie down and wake up at approximately the same time on any day of the week, because one hour of difference equals 24 hours of adaptation.

The situation is aggravated when your chronotype is a true owl, but by the evil fate of fate you have to get up early and go to work. This means that you constantly want to sleep. And only on weekends you can switch to a comfortable mode.

Daria: So, the difference between rising on weekends and weekdays is about 5-6 hours. And to recover, the “owl” needs 5-6 days, or even a whole week.

Daria: If you don’t have the willpower for such a thing, try to trick yourself. For example, make a tight schedule for the weekend – even if it consists of pleasant things. That way you’ll definitely have to get up early so you don’t oversleep.

This will not only help to avoid weekend insomnia, but also to spend your vacation with benefit. Start taking care of yourself, don’t put it off.
