What you can't do to be creative

Perhaps it is these habits that separate you from brilliant ideas.

A capable artist may not happen if parents do not take the child to art school. Or the child will end up with a demotivating or incorrect teacher who will destroy the desire to create. Or just someone (parents, the child himself) will become lazy. It will turn out, probably, not bad or even a good drawing person, but not a good artist.

But there are habits that negatively affect creativity. Let’s talk about them.

Olga Sergacheva

Candidate of Psychological Sciences, mentor of the Virtual Clinic at the Moscow Institute of Psychoanalysis.

First of all, creativity is an ability. On the one hand, it is determined by physiological gifts, on the other hand, it is a potency that may or may not be realized.

Creativity in cognitive psychology is considered as a phenomenon that includes the following elements: fluency, flexibility and originality:

  • fluency is the number of ideas that arise in a certain unit of time;
  • flexibility is the ability to switch between ideas;
  • originality is, on the one hand, the difference of ideas from the common ones, on the other hand, the heterogeneity of ideas within one process.

If we consider creativity in this way, a highly creative person will be one who can produce a sufficient number of heterogeneous and original ideas per unit of time.

If we are talking about reality, the indicators of a creative person are the questions that arise in his/her direction: “How did you come up with that?!” and “Was that possible?!”.

What hinders our creativity?

Having defined what creativity is, let’s consider the habits that hinder its development. They can be divided into two groups: physiological and psychological (the names of the groups are rather conventional).

“Physiological habits

  • Regular use of psychoactive substances. We are talking about substances that affect the work of the brain – from caffeine to alcohol and nicotine, including a number of medications (nootropics, depressants, antidepressants). Everyone knows a person (or perhaps is such a person) who is active, productive and creative “under coffee”. And a perfect “vegetable” without coffee. So, even a single use interferes with the dynamics of creativity, what to speak of constant stimulation.

For the feeling of pleasant relaxation can pay dearly. In the previous material told about the consequences of regular alcohol consumption.

  • Violation of work and rest – sleep, nutrition and daily routine in general. These are the most frequent patterns of behavior, creating almost insurmountable obstacles. With an unfixed daily regimen, the body’s resources will be diverted to maintaining some sort of physical balance. There will be no energy left for creativity, its maintenance, and even less for development. Examples of geniuses who slept for four hours are, unfortunately, only exceptions to the rule.

“Psychological” patterns of a person that reduce the level of his creativity or hinder its development

  • The habit of choosing the familiar. It is a huge obstacle to the development of creativity. People who do this limit their own creativity. Try living differently. And you don’t have to do something unfamiliar at first. It’s enough to think about options. This is already a step for the development of creativity.
  • Low self-esteem. Inner “carving” self blocks any attempts to go beyond the usual. Such a person does not speak at meetings, because he thinks he will say some nonsense or obvious to everyone thing. That is, any habit of thinking of oneself as a trivial, stupid, unworthy person is the habit of a person who refuses to be creative. Not to be confused with the inner critic, which is different in that it evaluates actions rather than ourselves, stimulates us to look for other ways, to correct mistakes, that is, to be more creative. Compare: “I am a fool” and “I have done something stupid”. In the first case, it’s a diagnosis; in the second, it’s an unpleasant assessment that can be corrected.
  • Snobbery. A guaranteed way to stall in development. Any attitude from a position on top limits creativity. As soon as a person says, “That’s a load of crap!” they are laying a brick in the wall in the way of creativity.
