How to choose the right sunglasses, so as not to harm your eyesight

How to choose good sunglasses with UV protection?

We tell you together with an ophthalmologist.

Sunglasses are one of the main attributes of summer. They not only complement the image, but also protect the eyes from the negative effects of ultraviolet radiation. After all, the sun’s rays are no less harmful to the eyes than to the skin.

What should you pay attention to when choosing sunglasses? There are three important factors.

What sunglasses are for

The main purpose of sunglasses is to provide your eyes with protection from ultraviolet light. Excessive exposure to it can lead to eye diseases and accelerate the aging of the skin around the eyes. Over the years, sun damage can provoke, for example, the development of cataracts (clouding of the lens), inflammation of the cornea, damage to the retina.

Glasses, on the other hand, help avoid this. Plus they protect your eyes from wind, dust and bright light. Therefore, the accessory should be worn by everyone without exception. Especially those who spend a lot of time outdoors. People with eye diseases and high sensitivity to bright light, as well as children, sunglasses are mandatory.

How to choose sunglasses

Valeria: The ideal sunglasses are 100 percent UV blocking. The degree of protection of the lens has its own marking, which is indicated on the earpiece of the glasses. The designation UV400 guarantees good protection, but UV380 is considered to be the minimum permissible. The smaller the number on the marking, the weaker the protection.

The color of the lenses of sunglasses can be different: black, brown, gray. Perfectly cope with the task of reflecting the sun’s rays mirror lenses. But glasses with pink, blue, orange, green, yellow lenses do not cope with this function, so you can wear them as an accessory indoors or in cloudy weather.

Another important factor to pay attention to when choosing glasses is the degree of darkening of the lenses. It, as well as the degree of UV protection, is indicated on the earpiece and has several categories.

  • 0-1st category. Glasses with this marking do not protect the eyes, their glasses pass up to 100% of radiation.
  • 2nd category. Such glasses are suitable in cloudy weather in the city.
  • 3rd category. These glasses are suitable for eye protection from the sun. They have a standard degree of protection from ultraviolet light, they transmit no more than 20% of the sun’s rays. This category also includes photochromic lenses, which change color depending on the degree of illumination.
  • Category 4. Light transmittance is not more than 10%. Glasses with a polarizing filter fall into this category. Optimal eye protection, including in places of high light exposure, for example, in the mountains.

Where is the best place to buy glasses

Valeria: If possible, you should give preference to specialized opticians, salons, pharmacies. There the risk of running into a fake is almost zero, because all goods sold in pharmacies are subject to multi-stage inspection, have all the necessary certificates. Their sale is controlled by the relevant authorities.

Also, the sale of glasses of well-known brands specializing in the production of professional optics does not cause complaints. These are stores of everyday use – sports, industrial, as well as similar sites of online stores and marketplaces. But you should trust only if the seller has documents and certificates confirming the quality of products.
