How many calories can you burn by walking all day?

Sometimes it is very difficult to force yourself to go to workout, but even laziness can be useful. For example, if you replace a trip to the gym with a walk, the result will be no worse. And if you diversify your route with hilly terrain and add weights, the effect will be comparable to strength training.

In addition to work, each of us has family, friends, pets with whom we spend time in one way or another. You can have fun with benefit, if at least sometimes get out of the house and spend more time in the fresh air. If you walk every day and walk a lot, you will always be physically fit.

How many calories can you burn if you walk all day?

Let’s start with the fact that walking is a simple, free, and most importantly – a very useful exercise. Modern man often lacks time for sports, but this problem can be solved.

Here are some arguments in favor of walking:

  • Walking reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease by 9.3% and the level of “bad” cholesterol by 7%. The results of this study were published in the journal Medicine & Science.
  • Scientists say that, unlike running, walking burns more calories.
  • Walking reduces stress on the joints – which, by the way, is a common problem for advanced runners.
  • Walking relieves stress. Seriously, what’s better than your favorite playlist in your headphones, fresh air and sunshine? Plus, walking is a great way to view the neighborhood around your home in more detail than through a car window.

The average stride pace when walking on a flat road is about 3-4 km/h. In such a rhythm a person consumes up to 150-200 kcal/hour. The weight of a person also matters – a larger athlete needs more energy for physical activity. On average, a weight of 60 kg burns 3.2-3.5 kcal/min, while a weight of 100 kg burns at least 4.7-5 kcal/min. But there is a nuance here: these figures refer to ideal natural conditions and circumstances, which are extremely rare.

We have taken this into account and calculated the calories that would be burned in other situations:

A walk with children and friends is a good way not only to energize with positive emotions, but also to tone your figure. If you walk all day, the effect will be even greater. The average calorie consumption will be 3.5 kcal/min. Let’s assume that you walk for four hours at a relaxed pace in the park – in this case 240 minutes multiplied by 3.5 kcal. You get 840 kcal, which is equivalent to 100 grams of fat.

Unfavorable weather conditions – in bad weather, there is nothing underfoot: garbage, holes, puddles – movement in this case will be difficult. And to overcome obstacles, the body will need additional energy. Therefore, in such conditions, about 250-300 kcal/hour is spent.

Rugged, hilly terrain – in such conditions there will be both descents and ascents, various holes and bumps, while walking on which our body will intensively include stabilizer muscles. All this will additionally affect energy expenditure. A calm walk burns up to 350-400 kcal/hour.

Pet – a walk with pets is always a little adventure, and not always harmless. After all, it is impossible to predict the mood of a pet. For example, during a walk, with a dog, the pace of walking will definitely be uneven. In case you need to calm the pet down, you will be pulling with resistance, and if he runs sharply – short accelerations. What’s not a high-intensity workout? During such a walk, up to 400-450 kcal/hour is burned.

Weights – let’s say you’reon a hiking trip. Surely you will bring a backpack with necessary things and a snack – all this will serve as an additional weight. Energy expenditure in this case will reach 400-450 kcal/hour.
