Scientists have discovered that sleeping is better in socks

Everyone knows that sleep is one of the most important parts of our lives. This becomes especially clear early in the morning, when an extra hour is in short supply. In fact, some scientists believe that a good night’s sleep is assured to those who use a small flyhack – insulate their feet! Let’s talk to a somnologist about whether sleeping in socks is really good for you.

What do researchers say?

Some studies show that adults who prefer sleeping in socks fall asleep faster. The warming of the feet causes the blood vessels to dilate. This releases heat and decreases the internal body temperature. This provokes the “sleep” signal.

A person’s internal body temperature is influenced by their biological clock, also called the circadian rhythm. The circadian rhythm controls the timing of sleep, making a person feel sleepy at night and awake in the morning.

Body temperature rises gradually throughout the day, peaking near evening when people feel most awake. Body temperature then decreases during the night, causing drowsiness.

Why do feet get cold?

Olga Begasheva, a doctor-somnologist, explains that sleeping in socks helps to combat cold feet and hands, because insulation helps to ensure good blood flow. If a person has such problems, it indicates bile stagnation, sluggish spleen syndrome, reduced stomach acidity, which is especially characteristic in the fall.

Many people are also faced with restless legs syndrome – this is the process when a person makes active movements in his sleep, their number can reach up to 50 per hour! Of course, this causes great harm to the nervous system, and to cope with this will help, again, simple socks. In this sense, pay attention to the full picture: how do you sleep? On what kind of bed? Are you comfortable? The main cause of restless legs syndrome is insufficient iron stores, especially common in women. In blood tests, Olga states, everything may be normal, but ferritin and serum iron may be insufficient.

Alternative methods

If sleeping in socks is uncomfortable for you, but the problems are present, you can use other ways to normalize sleep – warm baths before bedtime will perfectly set the body to rest. Visiting a bath, sauna, taking a course of massage has a great effect on the state of the body. Exercise in the gym, training in the fresh air or even the usual active walking helps to cope with all the difficulties in micro-blood circulation.

What else can cause sleep disturbances?

Please note, if you have constant chilliness, you should have your thyroid gland checked. The fact is that we live in a region endemic for iodine deficiency, and due to this hypothyroidism is a very common pathology. If you observe excessively cold extremities, you should definitely consult an endocrinologist.

Also, if in addition to the chilliness you have cramps in the legs, it most likely signals a lack of vitamins B, as well as a deficiency of trace elements: calcium, magnesium. Vitamin D, in this case, you may also be deficient, which is due to the time of year. The best way to check this is to see a doctor and get analyzed for macro- and micro-elements.

Fall is not the time to experiment with your health! Keep insulated and take care of your health.
