New Year and Christmas holidays are the most magical time to discover the Moscow region. Snow-covered forests, majestic architecture, parks, fairs, ski slopes and skating rinks – if you try hard enough, you will be able to see and try everything in a week of weekends.

Patriot Park and Kubinka

In the Patriot Park in Kubinka it is easy to spend all eight days of New Year holidays – so large-scale and diverse are all the objects, expositions and museum grounds presented here. Shortly before the New Year on the Cathedral Square of the main temple of the Russian Armed Forces pour the largest skating rink in the Moscow region, next to build a slide for tubing, and throughout the park unfold festive fairs and spontaneous themed towns.

In between winter fun you should definitely pay attention to the main exposition of the park: take a look at the Partisan Village, the museum complex “Road of Memory” and the equestrian sports club.

“Sorochany”, “Yakhroma”, “Volen”.

Fans of alpine skiing and snowboarding will easily orientate where the best slopes are concentrated in the Moscow region – in the North-West, in Dmitrovsky district. Several snow parks neighbor on a compact territory: “Sorochany”, “Yakhroma”, “Volen” and “Stepanovo”.

While the first two will be suitable for beginners and amateurs with “Moscow Region” experience, the second two will be interesting even for those who are used to the slopes of the Alps or the Caucasus. Thanks to the successful neighborhood, the Dmitrov resorts are also in good order with apres-ski: after skiing you can relax in spa complexes or meet a snowy January night with a glass of wine.

Sergiev Posad

If you have been putting off a trip to Sergiev Posad for a long time, the New Year holidays, or Christmas to be more precise, are the best time to get acquainted with one of the largest and oldest shrines not only in the Moscow region, but also in the whole of Russia. During Christmas there is a special festive atmosphere in the city, and not only in the Trinity-Sergius Lavra itself, but also outside the monastery walls.

Not far away, on the Kelarsky pond, an ice-skating rink is being poured, hot tea with kovrizhki is served nearby. By the way, it is in Sergiev Posad that the Toy Museum with an exposition of more than 30 thousand exhibits is located, where the youngest travelers should definitely stop by. And just a walk around the city, along the pedestrian “restaurant” Karl Marx Street, on Krasnogorsk Square and numerous souvenir shops will be an ideal route for a short trip from Moscow.

Kolomna

Kolomna can safely be called the museum capital of the Moscow region: even a casual wandering around the city is bound to include two or three factories or manufactories specializing in Kolomna specialties – from pastila and kalacha to soap and samovar. In any other city stylized under the antique “production” could seem kitsch – but not in Kolomna.

In the cozy cobbled center next to the Kremlin wall they look appropriate and even charming. And many other objects have been preserved or recreated with historical accuracy, which helps to get into the atmosphere of the New Year and Christmas in a quiet county town, rare for the present times.

Istra and New Jerusalem

“Near Moscow Palestine”, as New Jerusalem is often called, strikes a harmonious combination of the spiritual and secular. Spiritual is, of course, the majestic New Jerusalem Monastery, built in the image and likeness of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Golgotha in Jerusalem.

For the secular is responsible the Historical, Architectural and Art Museum “New Jerusalem”, which has unique collections of Russian art: from ancient church utensils to works by Savrasov and Aivazovsky. And the area where the complex is located is no less impressive: on a sunny winter morning you want to walk here as long as possible, despite any frost.
