14 warm Soviet New Year cards

Let’s remember how our parents congratulated their loved ones with the holiday.

How long have you been sending heartfelt letters to someone? I’m sure it’s been a very long time. In the era of messengers, there is simply no point in writing handwritten wishes to someone. But sometimes it’s still nice to receive such a card.

Recently, and perhaps for the first time, I received a postcard from a friend from Chelyabinsk (I live in Moscow). In it, in addition to stamps and our postal addresses, there was a simple phrase “From Chelyabinsk with best wishes!”. It seemed like nothing. But how happy I was to see this message from the Urals in my mailbox, I can’t tell you.

Greeting cards are always about goodness. Remember how your grandparents bought them in advance for the most important family holidays, wrote congratulations with a pen and then handed them to you together with a present.

New Year’s Eve cards also became a tradition at some point. Soviet people sent them all over the USSR to remind their loved ones once again that they were near. After all, not everyone had home phones back then.

My parents and I found several USSR New Year cards. They carefully kept them for many years – my mom got some of them from her grandmother. By the way, the oldest cards are from the 50s. And all of them are in perfect condition.

And so that you could get more into the spirit of the New Year and see what were the greeting cards of those years, I made a small selection of cards that I took from my personal family archive.

Earlier we told you about how sports were practiced in the Soviet Union. You can find the training at the link.
