In general, there are no specific foods that you crave when you’re sleep deprived. But our perception of food changes completely.

How does lack of sleep affect your appetite?

Valerija: Relationship with food and sleep are closely linked. One of the reasons for this connection is the production of two important hormones that only take place while we sleep – leptin and ghrelin. The former is responsible for the feeling of satiety and the latter for the feeling of hunger.

If we have not slept well, the synthesis of hormones is disturbed. As a result, hunger returns half an hour after a meal, and the feeling of satiety comes when you do not eat a bite. Therefore, if you are constantly hungry or suffer from overeating, you can safely talk about lack of sleep.

Scientific research confirms this. So, scientists from the University of Cape Town in South Africa analyzed seven different works related to sleep and eating behavior. And found that when we sleep more, during the day hunger appears less often, and sweet and salty want less.

When we’re overworked, the brain tries to find something pleasant to eat. And the fastest and easiest source of dopamine is food. So the less you sleep – the more tired you are – the more you will “attack” unhealthy food.
