Spike Lee’s sneaker encyclopedia: how did the director influence snicker culture?

During his career, director Spike Lee managed to make a large number of movies and even received an Oscar award. However, Spike used his talent to create not only movies, but also commercials for the sports brand Nike. Cooperation has a long history since 1986, when his first work was released, in which Michael Jordan took part.

For these 30 years, Spike has never once appeared in public in the sneakers of another company. We made a selection of the most interesting models from his collection, in which he appeared at various events.

Why snickerheads should know about Spike?

Spike has been a devoted fan of the New York Knicks basketball team for many years. At every competition, he wears orange to symbolize the team, sits in the front row and runs out onto the court to cheer on the players and inspire them to play well.

He also has his own sports apparel and accessories brand, Spike’s Joint. He constantly comes up with interesting T-shirt designs for adults and children, and actively participates in collaborations with other brands, resulting in stylish baseball caps. Recently, he presented a collection of socks invented in collaboration with Stance Socks, the design of which complements sneakers and sneakers from Jordan Brand.

Nike Air Presto x Off-White.

Spike came to the 75th Venice Film Festival in a very unusual look for himself, which immediately won over all the photographers from the red carpet.

Usually he chooses bright colors and unconventional models, but then he decided to wear Air Presto sneakers from the collaboration with Off-White, cap, cardigan of New York brand and classic pants.

Air Jordan 3 Tinker

At the Academy Awards in Los Angeles, director Spike Lee won the statuette for Best Adapted Screenplay and wowed everyone with his dazzling gold Air Jordan 3 sneakers with blue and white soles, Elephant Print inserts and bright red insides.

It turned out that the director was given these sneakers by Michael Jordan himself, who commissioned designer Tinker Hatfield to make a special model for the Oscars and Spike personally. These are not exactly the usual Jordans: on the right heel of the sneakers is the logo of 40 Acres and a Mule, Spike Lee’s production company.

Air Jordan 1 High Zip

The movie “Black Klansman” is probably the most important work in Spike Lee’s career. In honor of the premiere of the film in Cannes, Nike prepared a custom Air Jordan 1, but not in the classic version, but in a special version, where the usual lacing is replaced by a zipper on the front side.

Customized Air Jordan

At the 74th Cannes Film Festival, Spike appeared in a Louis Vuitton suit in hot pink. The director wore the suit with a double-breasted jacket with customizable “jordans” (one tongue featuring Spike himself, the other featuring his character from She’s Gotta Have It, Mars Blackmon), which in his world is the same as classic black shoes.

Nike Air Tailwind.

Back in the ’70s, NASA aerospace engineer Frank Rudy was working on sealing dense gases in rubber membranes when he realized his invention could be used as a shock absorber for the feet. Adding an “air cushion” to the sole of a shoe would reduce the impact on a person’s joints, and there would be no feeling of heaviness after prolonged wear.

Rudy’s idea was rejected by several shoe manufacturers until he brought it to Nike. The company used Frank’s technology to create the first sneakers with a hidden Air Tailwind tank. Undoubtedly, such sneakers are in Spike Lee’s collection.

He chooses them for everyday wear and for working on the movie, when you need to be on your feet all day. Such retro-style shoes attract the attention of colleagues and people on the street, and Spike likes to be in the center of attention.
