Battle of the riders: surfing or snowboarding?

Surfing, snowboarding, mountains and waves. It seems to be all mixed up in my head. But there is one man ready to conquer both elements. Mathieu Crepel, a multiple world champion in snowboarding, took an extreme challenge and, combining his passion for snowboarding and surfing, set off on a long journey. This is what the movie Shaka is about, a first and deeply personal story about the search for self.

Ahead of the movie’s release, Quiksilver polled trendsetters on which of the two sports they prefer. Naturally, the popular Instagram users split into two camps. We tell you what the thrill-seekers prefer.

Anna Orlova, snowboarder

“Freeride for me is a way of self-expression, every line is a part of me, and the mountains are a home in which I feel happy. It’s amazing that as a very young girl I realized that we were forever connected to the board, and that’s where that love has led me now…”

Artem Sheldr, snowboarder

“To be honest, I wouldn’t want to choose one thing over the other. Both of these activities are great in their own way and complement each other. It just so happens that I was born near the Ural Mountains and I love snow since childhood, so snowboarding is closer to me.”

Andrey Moskvin, snowboarder, MTB racer

“No one asked me, but I choose #snowboarding. Hello everyone from the front line.”

Surfer gang

Aiza Anokhina, blogger

“I choose, of course, surfing. Because surfing is my most cherished dreams. Because the energy of the ocean is something that is vital to me. It’s strongest connection and closeness with the elements keeps me from living peacefully in a metropolis. I choose surfing for the feeling of absolute happiness when catching a wave or seeing others do it!”

Kirill Umrikhin, photographer

“It so happens that surfing is the only sport I enjoy surfing more than photographing it. Well, or as much as I do. But surfing is straight up really cool. And it doesn’t matter where: in the cold “milky” waters of the Black Sea or on the Mauritius coast of the warm Indian Ocean. Surfing helps me to calm down, think and relax. It’s meditation and sport at the same time.

Sergei Expandedvaev, surfer, traveler

“I choose surfing. There are no questions here, but I’ll tell you why. I used to snowboard, that’s where I started. More precisely, I continued after skateboarding. But it was surfing that turned my whole life and consciousness upside down”.

Balancing on the edge

Olya Shabli, blogger

“I choose to eat good food. Snowboarding or surfing, I’m equally far from both. Rather, I enjoy watching more than participating.”

Kirill Nagiyev, actor

“I choose both! For the energy of the mountains and the ocean, for the closeness with the elements.”

Desislava Kalcheva, blogger

“I’m in favor of snowboarding, of course, but surfing also impresses me. I love it for the energy of the ocean, for the strongest connection and closeness with the elements.”

Eugene Jun Ivanov, snowboarder

“Of course, it was snowboarding that started it all for me. Living in the far north, I could not think that I would go to the oceans, surf, and recently also teach surfing… Now I can’t imagine an endless winter season, I definitely need a reset, rest and inspiration for the new winter season. Surfing gives me all of that.”

Olya Raskina, windsurfer

“I was naturally confused and decided that definitely both – surf and snow, that the choice is just absurd, and then I thought – what is more important for me now! Snowboarding is my first love, it’s forever, I have a lot of different memories with it – the first competitions, injuries, hospitals, mountains, powders and the first elevator up – the last one down, when there were no obligations, just pure joy from riding from morning till evening….

And surfing specifically now is an endless merry-go-round of joy, fighting feelings of fear, an opportunity for growth, development, a better understanding of waves and the ocean. I really want to learn how to surf awesome! I know that I will say the same thing when I’m 50 or 70, because there are not the same waves and the same descents on a board. And it’s not a drug, it’s just love, it’s so salty and snowy at the same time”.

Artem Garashchenko, kitesurfer

“My opinion is that both surfing, snowboarding, and all other board sports are related, and in fact differ from each other only by the surface under your feet and the way of acceleration. By riding one, you can automatically ride the other, and it’s only by riding everything that you can maximize the feel of the board, progress faster and move forward.”

What do you choose?
