Wrong hiccup: what happens if you drink alcohol after a workout?

Why shouldn't you drink alcohol after a workout?

A glass of wine at dinner is, of course, a good thing. But sometimes it is worth abstaining.

A lot is known about the harm of alcohol and its negative impact on the body. But not everyone can once and for all give up alcoholic beverages. To minimize the risks and consequences, it is worth using alcohol wisely: in moderation and at the right time. Thus, in some cases it is really worth abstaining from alcohol, including beer, which many people consider a “light” drink. Together with nutriciologist Anna Garnova, we tell you how alcohol affects the body and whether you can drink it after training.

How does alcohol affect the body?

It additionally loads the liver
Ethyl alcohol is a heavy product for a person. It gives a big load on the main “detox organ”, the liver. It will not process and eliminate other substances from the body until it completely gets rid of ethyl alcohol.

Moreover, the liver as such does not hurt, unlike, for example, the stomach or head. Therefore, you can catch the first symptoms of diseases only by analyzing. When was the last time you had a complete medical examination?

Worsens the quality of sleep
Alcohol affects sleep, especially its deep phase. Even if you fall asleep peacefully after a glass of wine, sleep will only be superficial. Which means that the body will not have the opportunity to fully recover.

Gives you extra calories
Alcohol itself is quite caloric, about 9 kcal per 1 g. In one glass of wine about 150 kcal, and this is 50 g of buckwheat in dry form. And imagine how many calories in a cocktail, for example, in the “Blue Lagoon”? But despite the caloric content of alcohol, we do not feel satiety. In addition, there is also a psychological aspect – control is weakened and you can eat much more than you need. This can lead to overeating and further increase the load on the liver.

What happens if you drink alcohol after a workout?

After a strenuous workout, you need rest and time for your body to recover. And alcohol affects the body’s functions. If you drink alcohol after fitness, the effect is noticeably reduced and it takes more time to recover.

There is no alcoholic drink that can be recommended after training. It is better to start from personal preferences and tolerance. If you really want to drink, nutriciologist recommends giving up cocktails in favor of pure drinks.

It is also worth considering your daily calorie intake, if you follow it. Alcohol is a carbohydrate, and you should fit it into your diet based on this. In addition, you should eat well before alcoholic beverages, as protein and fatty foods slow down its absorption.

Nutriciologist advises to trust your body and not to invent unnecessary problems. If there are no medical contraindications, nothing will happen if you drink occasionally. But you should not be mistaken: alcohol consumption is not associated with better health or longevity.
