6 reasons why you feel hungry even after eating

What to do if you constantly want to eat? Why does this happen?

We understand together with a nutritionist.

If after a meal you are literally haunted by thoughts of food, the reasons may be more serious than banal gluttony. The constant desire to chew something can be a signal of health problems. What causes excessive appetite?

Hunger and appetite are regulated by the coordinated work of the nervous, endocrine and digestive systems.

Sleep deprivation

Irina: Those who don’t sleep well are often prone to overeating. Lack of sleep affects the hormones that control hunger and satiety – ghrelin and leptin. Ghrelin, the “hunger hormone,” signals to the brain that it’s time to eat. When you are sleep deprived, the body produces more of this hormone. Leptin signals to the brain that you are satiated. When a person is chronically sleep deprived, leptin levels drop. And this is a signal for the brain to increase the feeling of hunger to get more energy.

Deficiencies in important substances

Constant cravings for overeating can signal vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Without important substances, the body works in emergency mode, and bouts of hunger only signal its attempt to recover.

Obesity

Irina: Adipose tissue is an endocrine organ that produces substances that affect the sensitivity of tissues to insulin. That is, fat plays a key role in the development of insulin resistance and type II diabetes mellitus, which worsen each other with progression. In insulin resistance, cells are not nourished because they do not feel insulin – glucose gets into the cells worse – there is no “fuel”. Satiety comes with a delay, so there is a compulsive feeling of hunger.

Hormonal imbalance

Increased appetite can be associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). During this period, as a rule, the hormonal background decreases. There are swellings, and mood swings, and even aggression (severe form of premenstrual syndrome). Against this background, there is a craving for carbohydrates (sweets, buns), because they release hormones of joy.

Eating behavior disorder

Bulimia can lead to uncontrolled appetite after an episode of stress. It is a serious mental health disorder that needs specialized treatment.
