Who and why should not eat grapes?

Grapes are a delicious and healthy berry, rich in nutrients, antioxidants, fiber and vitamins. It can reduce the risk of obesity and diabetes, and supports brain and heart health. The juicy berries of grapes are impressive not only for their flavor and health benefits. Grapes have a large number of vitamins and minerals:

  • fat-soluble – vitamin A, beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, E and K;
  • water-soluble – vitamins C, B1, B2, B3 (PP), B4, B5, B6 and B9;
  • minerals – phosphorus, potassium, copper and manganese.

The peel of dark grapes (red and black varieties) contains flavonoids that promote the formation of collagen, which improves skin and bone tissue.

Grapes also contain resveratrol – a powerful antioxidant that helps fight free radicals, protects the body from premature aging. It activates special proteins, sirtuins, which are responsible for repairing damaged cells. Also in berries there is fiber, which reduces the concentration of cholesterol, prevents cardiac disorders, improves digestion.

But in a number of diseases and health problems, sweet fruit can harm the body. We tell you who should limit or exclude grapes from the diet.

In diseases of the gastrointestinal tract

Despite its beneficial properties, grapes, like other fruits and berries, increase the secretion of gastric juice, which can provoke an exacerbation of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract:

  • gastritis with increased acidity;
  • peptic ulcer disease;
  • duodenal ulcer;
  • has a laxative effect, so it is not recommended in case of diarrhea and tendency to diarrhea;
  • also not recommended in case of tendency to flatulence;
  • chronic renal failure, as grapes contain a large amount of potassium.

For diabetes mellitus

Grapes are one of the sweetest fruits with a high content of fructose and glucose, so in diabetes mellitus and insulin resistance it should be abandoned.

With heart problems

People with cardiovascular diseases should be cautious about eating grapes.

For the treatment of angina pectoris, coronary artery disease, the consequences of myocardial infarction and chronic heart failure, special drugs are prescribed. They can cause an increase in the level of potassium in the blood, so people taking them should moderately consume foods with a high potassium content, which includes grapes.

How many grapes you can eat per day

Grapes are a worthy element of a complete diet. But do not forget about the norm to get the maximum benefit without harm to the body.

There are a lot of natural sugars in berries. To control their intake, try not to abuse grapes and eat no more than one cup (about 125 g) a day.

It is recommended to soak the berries (at least 15 minutes) in running water before consumption to get rid of pesticides accumulated in the peel.

Combine grapes with other fruits and vegetables, cheese and chicken, add to salads.
