A psychologist explained why yelling is beneficial and gave instructions for maximum effect

Modern life is complicated. Conflicts at work, misunderstandings in the family, external circumstances, natural disasters – all this puts an imprint on mental health. In order not to start destructive mechanisms, it is important to relieve stress in time.

Relaxation and emotional cleansing can be obtained using various techniques and practices from specialists. Somewhere you will need the help of a psychologist, somewhere you can cope by yourself.

Scream therapy is a tool from the second category. It can be a tool for working on your own. It is accessible and effective. However, not everything is so simple. We deal with the nuances together with a clinical psychologist.

In the late 1970s, the famous psychotherapist Arthur Janov began to promote the theory of cry therapy. He believed that this was a way for people to release their negative emotions, get rid of aggravating traumas, and “live out” certain feelings. Although not all experts believe in the efficacy of this theory, I am convinced that cry therapy does work. It benefits a person’s psyche in the long run. How does it work?

During the practice a person’s endorphins are released, and those, in turn, have a positive effect on mood. Sometimes such therapy can replace urgent visits to a specialist and quickly get rid of stress. To accumulate negative emotions is very harmful. Even more dangerous to suppress them.

But it is necessary to shout correctly. That for you it was useful and safe. It is also worth thinking about the comfort of others. So, what is the ideal scenario for a therapy session?

How to shout in a way that is beneficial for everyone?

During therapy, a person “shouts out his grief.” He is in the moment letting go of frustration and all that has been weighing him down. In order for the practice to be successful, a certain algorithm must be followed.

1. Find a deserted place

Go to a park, a forest, go to a dacha alone. It is important that no one can disturb you.

2. Try to relax as much as possible

Not everyone can shout from the start. Usually a person has a clamp, a feeling that his aggression is something shameful. What to do about it? Lie down, assuming the fetal position. Breathe slowly and deeply. Try to let go of the tension completely. You don’t have to scream from this position. It’s a preparatory moment. This way you will be able to distract yourself from thoughts like, “What if someone is here?”, “What will random people think?”, etc.

3. Concentrate on your problems

Mentally “pile up” all the things that are weighing you down. Focus on that.

4. Scream

Put all your pain and worries into this cry. When you feel your breath is running out, stop.

Repeat the cycle as many times as you feel necessary. Finish when you realize you are emotionally exhausted. If in the process you feel that screaming is not enough and want to break something, hit – give yourself free will. Cut wood, take a stick and break it, wave your arms, jump.

5. Calm down

After the session, take a rest. Sit in a comfortable position, relax your muscles, focus on your breathing. Immerse yourself, meditate.

By the way, a great way to shout and free yourself from negative emotions is to attend soccer matches or other sporting events. Here you can have a blast.

Are there contraindications?

World psychotherapists believe that this procedure should be done very carefully. You should not scream constantly and in every acute situation resort to it. Therapy is intended for extreme cases, when a person can no longer carry the whole load of negative emotions inside himself.

On a permanent basis it is worth calming down with other methods: self-analysis, working through traumas. Do not bring yourself to psychosis by exhausting screaming. Conduct therapy point by point, so that one session helped you to cleanse yourself and do not remember the problems for a long time.

It is right to resort to cricotherapy if more standard methods of stress relief have not worked.

What are the benefits?

Stanislav Grof – a prominent psychologist of our time – has conducted a number of studies of cry therapy and described its effectiveness in detail. In his opinion, the benefits of these practices have been confirmed both in theory and in practice – in the treatment of neuroses and psychoses. Patients who underwent the therapy reported a feeling of lightness and calmness.

However, the method is still insufficiently researched and requires a cautious approach. It is best practiced with the support of a psychologist. Scream therapy cannot be considered a full-fledged alternative to traditional therapy.
