Soccer stadiums have been converted into hospitals

Maracana, Santiago Bernabeu and Krylatskoye arenas are now fighting coronavirus.

Due to the coronavirus, hospitals do not have enough places for patients and the problem has affected the whole planet. One of the solutions is to open temporary hospitals inside sports stadiums or on the territory adjacent to them. This is a logical solution when there is no competition during a pandemic. We show you how large arenas now look like in different cities around the world.

“Zhuankou”, China

The first to face such a need was China, and more specifically, the city of Wuhan. The main local arena “Zhuankou”, designed for 54 thousand spectators, was converted into a hospital. The construction work took a little over a week.

“Maracana” and “Pacaembu”, Brazil

Brazil is in an extremely dire situation right now with the coronavirus. President Bolsonaro has long criticized the social isolation that is affecting the economy. In the last month and a half, two health ministers who disagreed with the country’s leader have resigned.

In many ways, measures of exclusion are determined by state heads of state. Rio de Janeiro opened a hospital inside the Maracana, while São Paulo opened a hospital inside the Pacaembu arena in the city center.

“Santiago Bernabeu”, Spain

Real Madrid’s stadium became not a hospital, but a warehouse for the supply and distribution of items needed to fight the coronavirus. The Santiago Bernabeu also became a place where people could donate medical equipment.

Parc y Scarlets and Millennium, Wales

In the Welsh town of Carmarthenshire, authorities converted a rugby stadium. Wooden bases have been laid on top of the turf normally used by the Scarlets team. Now the space has been given over to doctors from the local health authority.

In Wales, they have made a hospital out of the biggest stadium in the country as well. We are talking about the Millennium, which has a capacity of 74.5 thousand spectators. It is the most spacious indoor arena in the world with natural turf.

“Aleksandar Nikolic Hall”, Serbia.

In Belgrade, the arena of the basketball teams Partizan and Crvena Zvezda – Aleksandar Nikolic Stadium, also known as Pionir Hall – became a hospital. Some 500 beds have been stocked there in case of an outbreak like the one in Spain or Italy. However, in Serbia, the situation has not become critical, and the beds have already been removed.

“Krylatskoe, Russia

As in other countries, in Russia, a number of stadiums were immediately equipped for coronavirus patients. One of these arenas was the ice palace in Krylatskoe. Now it can accommodate up to 1.3 thousand patients.

By the way, the re-equipment of the ice palace was received ambiguously.
