Things from the past: what was worn in the 80s and 90s

Nowadays, no passerby will be surprised if you go out in the street wearing sportswear. Most of them will not even think that you probably go to the fitness center in such a form. Sneakers, sweatshirts, sweatshirts and Olympics have long since become attributes of everyday style. The point is that in the last century sports were no longer considered the business of professional athletes and made available to everyone. We tell you how it influenced the modern fashion industry.

The cult of the beautiful body: how fitness became a universal craze?

In the middle of the XX century, people began to be more interested in their own physical form. Then the world was born in the interest in bodybuilding, in other words – bodybuilding. Because of the increased popularity of the direction began to open the first gyms for strength training, in which many men later worked on different muscle groups, equaling Arnold Schwarzenegger.

However, not every woman was ready to devote herself to bodybuilding and go to the basement gym. Therefore, aerobics developed in parallel with strength training. For the first time the term sounded in the 1960s in America from the mouth of Dr. Kenneth Cooper. Aerobics was positioned as a general physical exercise to prevent disease and keep fit.

Due to its accessibility, the fitness trend began to gain momentum. In the 70’s, music and dance moves were added to the usual exercises, and in the 80’s the workouts were broadcast on television and sold on videotapes. Aerobics was promoted by stars such as Judy Sheppard Missett, Cher and Heather Locklear. And the most recognizable face of the fitness trend was actress Jane Fonda.

By 1990, home fitness in general had become a cult trend. Every morning, thousands of women stood in front of TV screens and repeated the moves after the trainers. One of the most popular was Jake Steinfeld’s program Body by Jake, in which he talked about effective exercises with minimal equipment.

What did sports fashion in the ’90s evolve into?

The new decade saw the birth of a whole style trend, which is now called sports chic. Its key element is considered to be bright, tight tights. They were worn with massive sneakers, T-shirts, put under dresses and skirts. Also fashionistas from the 90’s combined with sportswear cropped tops, which exposed the stomach, preferably with a piercing in the navel. And guys preferred to wear jeans and baggy sweatshirts.

It was in the last decade of the XX century that bomber jackets became widely known. Now they have become not only a subject of everyday clothing, but also a real symbol of cool American teenagers from high school. Everyone remembers how the captain of the soccer team from the movies, who usually meets with a girl cheerleader, appears before the audience?

In addition, in the 90’s, the public became sharply concerned about environmental degradation around the world. Sports brands and their designers began to look for new solutions that would allow to produce clothes with minimal harm to the environment and recycle already used materials.

It is not for nothing that they say that over time, trends from the past break back into the fashion industry. Almost everything that was liked by sports style followers in the 80’s and 90’s is now winning the interest of XXI century buyers with renewed vigor. Bombers, hoodies, sweatshirts, sweatshirts, sneakers, sneakers and suit made of ecological materials – in such things you can often meet people on the streets of modern cities. Except that the colorful aerobics suits have faded into oblivion, but perhaps will return to the shelves of stores in a couple or three years.
