What is known about “pirole”? Doctor lists symptoms of new variant of coronavirus

A new variant of the coronavirus “pirola” was first detected in Denmark at the end of July 2023 and to date has already been reported in Canada, Israel, Portugal, South Africa, Sweden, the UK and the US.

What is “pirola”

“Pyrola” is a mutated “omicron” of COVID-19. The WHO has described the virus as a “variant under surveillance”.

In the UK, of the 37 patients reported as of September 17, seven required hospitalization. The first outbreak was reported in a nursing home.

In the U.S., as of September 8, “pyrrole” virus illness had been detected in nine states. There has been an increase in the incidence of COVID-19, but it is related to the identified strains of the virus. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducted a preliminary analysis, revealing that earlier vaccination works against the new variant of covid as well.

Symptoms

Symptoms of the disease may appear similar to those of other subtypes of coronavirus infection.

Ayshat Idarmacheva

Pediatrician, allergist-immunologist, expert of the Faculty of Medicine of Synergy University

“Symptoms of the virus are nonspecific – they are runny nose, headache, fatigue, sneezing, sore throat, but diarrhea, red eyes and rash may also be noted.”

The new strains can cause mild asymptomatic forms as well as quite severe ones. Bacterial complications of viral infection can be dangerous, manifesting as otitis media, bronchitis, pneumonia and other diseases. In some cases, loss of sense of smell is possible.

How the new strain differs from others

Epidemiologists in different countries are studying how contagious this virus is, the severity of complications from it, but recommend not to lose time and urgently vaccinate, especially patients with weakened immunity and the elderly.

It is noted that “pyrola” has more mutations. This variant spreads much faster than previous strains.

Despite the mutation of the virus, our immune system is already familiar with COVID-19 through disease or vaccination, so this strain will probably not be crushing for it.

Who is at risk and how to protect yourself

Olga Rubleva

Chief infectious disease doctor of the Instamed clinic network, expert of Synergy University

“With the beginning of fall, the growth of morbidity increases, including a new coronavirus infection.”

In the risk group, as a rule, are persons with reduced immunity: this includes small children and elderly people. There is also a high probability of getting this infection in those who often communicate with a large number of people: social workers, teachers, health workers.

As a preventive measure, it is recommended to:

  • washing hands;
  • rinse your nose after going outdoors;
  • avoid contact with infectious patients;
  • treat chronic diseases;
  • replenish iron and vitamin D deficiencies (under a doctor’s supervision).

No cases of infection have yet been identified in Russia, but experts do not rule out the possibility of the virus spreading worldwide within a few months.
