We’ll miss you: how to survive the cold season without water workouts

How to keep your wakesurfing training progress going in winter and fall? Where to ride?

Says the founder of Surf Like Pro club.

Of course, we are not California and can’t boast of year-round sunshine. Probably the only thing that keeps us warm in winter is true dedication to your favorite activity. It may not necessarily be sports, but it most certainly is.

Indeed, if you are engaged in complex-coordination sports, especially water sports – in the off-season will not be easy. In this case, your salvation is to buy an airplane ticket and go to a place where it is warm. There it will still be possible to “break in” and “roll” to the full. But let’s imagine that there is no such opportunity. You stay in your home country for the winter. The question arises: “What to do?”. Using the example of wakesurfing we will strategize how to survive the winter.

Semyon Shulgin

founder of Surf Like Pro

The most important thing, what we all do it for, is to keep going to the ocean. To develop and grow already in a real serious sport like surfing.

When does the season officially close?

There’s really no exact statement. It’s very individual. In practice, the warm season ends when the first cold weather arrives. For example, the first long series of rains, which cool the water to a temperature below 18 degrees. At this point, the main flow of people falls, they are practically gone. Only athletes remain. Most often it is September.

Semyon: Last year in our club the season lasted until October 10. For us it is a long time, we have never worked like that. The fall was warm and warm.

At the end of the season, the main thing is not to get sick

Cold weather comes rather quickly – you need to feel this moment in time and start using a wetsuit. It is necessary to constantly monitor the weather forecast in case of rain or “light breeze”. In this case, we can advise you to take warm things on the boat, such as woolen socks, a hat and a thermos with tea. Remember that if you are properly equipped, there will be no problems with riding in cool weather.

Semyon: When you arrive, quickly change into a wetsuit and you will be 100% warm in the water. Afterwards you quickly get out of the water, change clothes, a hat on your head, socks on your feet and warm tea in your hand. You will feel as comfortable as possible.

If you don’t fly, but continue training in the city

In wakesurfing, you can’t continue training without a boat. It is impossible to do it in winter in our climate. Unfortunately, this is a fact.

There are similar sports to wakesurfing, such as river wave riding. And there are waves, which are called “flow-ride” – it is an artificial wave, which was created right in the pool. You can go for a ride to keep your balance and gliding skills on the water.

Semyon: I would recommend the Surfway school. They do ocean surfing training courses both in the pool and on land. They are one of the strongest, probably almost the only ones in this area in Moscow, in Russia.

What to do with equipment? Tips on care

In case you didn’t know, you should always take care of your equipment. It would be great not to leave it on the dock (just kidding) and let it sit there all winter, covered with frost and frozen. Your gear should be brought home, rinsed in fresh water and packed away neatly until next season. It’s about the board. It’s the same with a wetsuit – rinse it thoroughly, dry it properly, fold it up and put it away.
