“Weakness, cramps, dizziness”. Nutriciologist told what are the dangers of popular diets

In the pursuit of beauty standards, many people forget about health. Any diet is a restriction of nutrient intake, which can be extremely dangerous to human life. Let’s look at the dangers of improper dieting.

Olga Dekker

Nutriciologist, nutritionist, member of the National Society of Dietitians and Nutritionists

Diets can cause significant harm to health. Especially when they are not balanced and lead to a reduction in calories. Lack of vitamins and minerals significantly weakens the immune system. As a result – the risk of developing various diseases increases.

Keto diet

The diet implies a high fat content and low carbohydrate intake. Due to this diet, the body goes into a state called ketosis. Fats are broken down into ketones, and they become the main source of energy.

The main risk here is an increase in cholesterol levels. This, in turn, often leads to cardiovascular disease. Also due to a low carbohydrate diet, a person can suffer from fatigue, lack of energy and decreased cognitive function.

A keto diet deprives the body of vitamins, minerals and fiber. This negatively affects long-term health.

What is a keto diet and whether it will help with weight loss, we answer in the previous material.

Protein diet

This method of weight loss involves increasing the consumption of proteins at the expense of excluding or limiting carbohydrates and fats. Unbalanced nutrition and a significant reduction in calories is extremely dangerous for health.

Protein diet contributes to an increase in the level of “bad” cholesterol. This means that the risk of heart disease increases. Also, the excess of an important “building material” of muscles negatively affects the work of the kidneys.

Lack of fats and carbohydrates does not allow the body to function properly. As a result – lack of energy, and a deficiency of vitamins, minerals and fiber can lead to various diseases.

Protein-fat diet

The diet includes a large amount of proteins and fats, while limiting the consumption of carbohydrates. If the body does not get enough glucose, diabetes can develop. Kidney malfunctions also occur.

Excessive amounts of protein over a long period of time can “spill over” into tubulopathy. This is a condition in which there is a change in the transportation of all organic substances in the kidneys. As a result – stones (concretions) will form even if a balanced diet is maintained.

Excess fats are bad for the brain, as well as for the liver, which has a hard time coping with a concentrated source of calories. Why? Many ketone bodies are formed and a ketoacidotic crisis develops. The lack of carbohydrates increases the risk of energy deficiency. The person will experience weakness and dizziness.

Low-carbohydrate diet

Limiting carbohydrate intake to 50-100 g per day can be dangerous to human health, especially if the diet is not balanced and is carried out without the supervision of specialists.

One of the most common problems associated with a low-carbohydrate diet is ketoacidosis. This is a decompensated form of diabetes mellitus. The disease leads to serious complications: for example, disorientation in space, seizures and even coma.

This effect is due to an increase in the level of ketone bodies in the blood. They are formed during the breakdown of fats and can accumulate in the body, forming malfunctions in the heart and brain.

Prolonged use of a low-carbohydrate diet can lead to a lack of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. These are abundant in fruits, vegetables and grains. There is a risk of developing vitamin C deficiency and osteoporosis. There is also a negative psychological impact on the body. It is about the deterioration of mood, irritability and depression.

How to lose weight correctly?

Before sitting on any diet, it is necessary to consult with a medical specialist. It is important to make sure that dietary restrictions are safe and effective.

In order not to harm your body, first of all, you need to change your eating habits. Choose a healthy and balanced diet that is rich in vitamins and micronutrients.
