What’s wrong with the food we buy at train stations, and what can we replace it with?

When traveling by train, many of us enjoy the “station romance” – wheels clattering on the rails, a good night’s sleep on the top shelf and, of course, the traditional “travel food” – grilled chicken, pirozhki, instant foods like “Doshirak” and mashed potatoes, which are so convenient to brew. But have we ever thought about what “train station food” carries? How safe is what we eat on the train, and what will be the consequences?

Another disadvantage of such foods is their high calorie content. Grilled chicken is almost twice as caloric as regular chicken. That is, eating about 100 grams of grilled chicken, you will get 200-250 kcal. For those who watch their weight and do not want to get fat – it is undesirable.

In the “station delicacies” and in the products of a quick brew, there are practically no vitamins. The main vitamins needed by a person are not contained in this food at all, so we can say that it is “empty food” without any benefit. If we talk specifically about “Doshirak”, it will not bring direct harm to the body. But after its use there is a risk of high blood pressure, GI problems, gastritis, ulcers and intestinal diseases.

Another nuance that not many people pay attention to is the conditions in which the food was cooked. Many outlets selling fast food try to keep clean, but the key word here is “try”. Often the shelf life of grilled chicken is greatly increased by the marinade made by experienced sellers. Therefore, there is a risk of buying a product far from the first freshness. Also do not forget that the apparatus for cooking grilled chicken may not be washed as often and thoroughly as we would like.

What to replace this food with?

There are many alternatives to harmful “road” food.

  1. Fruits and vegetables. Take with you natural vitamins that will cleanse the body of harmful substances, strengthen immunity, improve sleep and increase defenses. Bananas, apples, pears, tangerines, grapes, tomatoes and cucumbers will do. Wash them at home in advance, then on the road you will just take them out and eat them. By the way, from vegetables, a good option will be boiled potatoes in a jacket. And the most convenient of all is slicing. For example, celery stalks and carrots.
  2. Chops from the meat of chicken or turkey. They are very easy to prepare at home – you just need to cut the fillet into small pieces, cover with a bag, baste and fry for 15 minutes on a dry pan. Wrap in foil, add vegetables – and a healthy dish on the road with proteins, vitamins and minerals is ready.
  3. Hard-boiled eggs. The optimal option for a healthy road trip meal. Quickly cooked and perfectly digested by the body. They contain a large amount of vitamins A, B, E, D and K, as well as folic acid, iron and calcium. Boil them for eight minutes, cool and wrap them in two layers of foil.
  4. Canned foods. There are plenty of canned foods on sale now with an easy-to-open valve. You will not even need improvised means. Good enough PP-options – corn, peas, tuna, zucchini caviar and beans. But make sure there’s no sugar in the mix.
  5. If you want something heartier, try taking a pita and wrapping the ingredients to fill it in foil – chicken pieces, cucumbers and tomatoes, herbs and cheese.
  6. Buckwheat, fine pearlkina, bulgur or couscous and a thermos. Put the groats in a thermos, pour boiling water, add salt and after a while you get a full-fledged hot dish. You can add ghee or ghee oil (it is better to take with you in a small glass container) and finely chopped white dry mushrooms.
  7. Nuts and dried fruits. They need to be pre-soaked and dried, so that they activate their useful properties and are better digested in the intestines. A great option for a snack.

You should not forget about drinks. Soda and dairy will not be the best options on the road. Preference should be given to water without gas, morses, compotes and teas.
