4 collaborations on the edge of sport and art

Designers are inspired by Dali, Kandinsky and Monet, but sometimes artists are inspired by designers.

It would seem that what do sports and art have in common? Sure, some professional athletes can be called a kind of artists, but no one would ever think of bringing a painting to a soccer field or holding a tennis match in the Louvre. Or maybe they should? These four unusual sports brand projects prove that these spheres are closer than they seem at first glance.

Vans x MoMA

The popular brand Vans presented a collaboration with the Museum of Modern Art MoMA in New York. Designers of clothes, shoes and accessories were inspired by the works of outstanding artists, including Salvador Dali, Vasily Kandinsky, Lubov Popova, Claude Monet, Edward Munch, Jackson Pollock, Faith Ringgold. The items from the collection are not only practical and comfortable, they will become a highlight of any closet and another way of self-expression.

Sneakers Unboxed: Studio to Street exhibition

A new exhibition dedicated to the history of sneakers will be held at the Design Museum in London. It opens April 30 and runs through October 24, 2021. Sneakers Unboxed: Studio to Street is about one of the most versatile closet items worn by millions around the world every day – sneakers. Visitors will be able to learn how individual models like the Reebok Instapump Fury, Vans Half Cab and Asics Gel Lyte III became iconic.

In addition, the exhibition will showcase iconic collaborations that have shaped athletic footwear trends over the years, from Michael Jordan and Run-DMC to Kanye West.

Puma x Mr. Doodle

A creative project with a talented illustrator was presented by sports brand Puma. The design features Mr. Doodle’s signature drawings. In the new collection the drawn characters continue to explore the world of sports. The collaboration includes sneakers, T-shirts, hoodies, sports pants and sweatshirts.

British artist Sam Cox, better known as Mr. Doodle, discovered his love of doodles as a child and later developed a successful career.

The Puma x Mr. Doodle features two sneaker silhouettes, the Sky LX and the Deva.

Puma Thunder x Bradley Theodore

New York-based artist Bradley Theodore has colored Puma sneakers. This is his way of offering athletic shoe lovers an introduction to modern art. Some consider the Thunder Spectra to be one of Puma’s most successful new products of last year among the massive chunky dad shoes.

The shape of the Thunder looks similar to the silhouette of a car. To the black colorway, Theodore added bright accents, some tags and lettering, and his signature multi-colored skull on the heel.
