Petr Cech has gone into hockey. Which other stars have changed sports?

Recently, the sports world was shocked by the news that legendary goalkeeper of Chelsea and Arsenal soccer clubs Petr Cech signed a contract with British hockey club Guildford Phoenix. The athlete has already changed the soccer equipment for shields and skates and made his debut in the match against Swindon Wildcats.

The transition was so unexpected that we decided to remember other unique stories of athletes who once wanted to try something new. In our selection – the stars of the world arena, who radically changed their profile sport.

Lolo Jones: from running to bobsledding

American track and field athlete Laurie “Lolo” Jones has made history as one of the few female athletes to compete in both the Summer and Winter Olympics. Jones began her career by running the 60 and 100 meter hurdles. She won the world indoor short-course title twice, in 2008 and 2010. But in the final races at the Olympic Games in Beijing and London, Jones’ luck turned away from her: the athlete stopped one step away from the podium. However, Lolo decided to continue to fight for her dream and radically changed her life. Laurie herself once stated in an interview:

‘The type of sport, the time of year and the temperature don’t matter. I want to go to the Olympics and win a medal.

In the end, the girl chose bobsledding. For the sake of practicing a new sport Jones gained 13 kilograms and began to actively train as part of bobsled twos. After a while, she had her first successes in the form of prizes at World Cups. Then came a breakthrough: Lori won gold at the mixed bobsleigh and skeleton World Championships in 2013. She received an offer to be part of the U.S. National Olympic Team. At her first Olympics in Sochi, Laurie Jones went together with pro Elana Myers. The girl returned without medals, but with satisfied ambitions.

Usain Bolt: Lightning in soccer

Eight-time Olympic short track champion Usain Bolt is nicknamed Lightning by fans all over the world because he is the fastest man on earth. At the 2017 World Track and Field Championships, Bolt was unable to defend his titles and ended his career immediately after the competition.

Coming off the tracks, the athlete announced that he would like to start a career in professional soccer. Usain’s dream was Manchester United, but the English club is not taken so easily, even with a sports blat. However, Bolt’s career includes open training with Borussia Dortmund, playing for Norwegian club Stromsgodset and England’s national team club Old Trafford.

Even if Bolt’s career in soccer does not work out, the athlete does not intend to despair. In one of the interviews Usain said that he has already provided himself a decent life for many years ahead, and now he just wants to train in his own pleasure – the athlete finds it in soccer.
